Worth it to upgrade the cpu from a t60 from a t2300 to a t7200?

#1 Post by fefrie » Thu Apr 30, 2015 7:34 pm

I can understand that the higher clock speed is mostly useless in day to day usage since to maximize, it would require that I do something processor intensive, but is there any difference if I increase the L2 Cache from 2M to 4M? Will there be ANY appreciable difference? Will websites open any faster? Apps open quicker? That's my only real difference that I see with the t60 and newer laptops.

So many modern websites can bring an older computer to its knees, so yes upgrading the CPU, RAM and HDD to a higher spec is highly recommended. I've done this to my Z61p (identical to the T60p) machines and in one I also installed a Intel SSD drive. That particular machine really keeps up well with everything, plus it runs Windows 7 Pro with no problems and launches apps quickly and boots in just under 30 secs.
Z61p x3 (C2D T7600, 3GB, 500GB SSD, BCM70015, Advanced Dock x1, Mini Dock x2)
X61 (C2D T7500, 3GB, 250GB SSD, BCM70015)
X61s (2GB, 120GB SSD)
X60s (CD L2400, 3GB, 160GB)
T43p (P M 760, 2GB, IBM Port Replicator II)
G40 x2 (P4 2.8GHz, 2GB, 60GB)
G41 (P4 3.46GHz, 2GB, 40GB)

For less than $10 nowadays, I'd say go for it. Yesterday.

Ha, ha yes, I guess I've been a good boy and selling a lot of junk on ebay.

I've revisited this question a couple of times on ebay already but was always a little hesitant since I had troubles taking apart the fan off of the chip.

It's been awhile since I checked prices. Looks like they've dropped below $7 for the T7200's

Does this look like a good one?

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Intel-Core-2-Duo ... 1e95b626b1

Then it begs the question again.

Any difference between a t7200 and t7600.

I guess I'll go google it.

Answer: Mostly no, except to calm T60 obsolescence anxiety, of which there is still tons.

Far bigger difference in price than in performance.

Put aside those extra $30 towards a SSD.

Yes, did the SSD with an Intel 330G2. It was a great upgrade.

Now I only wish I could cram more than 3gb and override that SATA I speed.

Last question, I LOOOOOVE a silent cool computer. With the fan hardly on.

I already run the rightmark cpu utility.

31W vs 34W. Anything I should be concerned about.

Well I just upgraded the CPU and it seems a bit quicker, but for sure I can kiss goodbye the 49c cpu temps.

This definitley runs hotter.

Whelp. Forgot about applying RM clock.

Apparently when you install a new processor, you've got to reconfigure.

I'm getting away with .97v at full processor. Not too many BSOD's yet.

You may want to re-seat that heatsink, since my daughter's 14" T60 with T7400 and X1400 is idling in the mid-40s...in W7 32 Pro, that is.

Asides from cleaning off the paste, how do you 'reseat' the heatsink?

Is the t7200 any thinner?

It's a matter of making sure that it sits properly at all points, both over the CPU and GPU. I can't explain it any better than that.

Not that I'm aware of.

Well I'll try again. I put back in the 2400 processor and it immediately went back to normal temps.

I'm wondering if I just have a crummy processor. I did get it from china.

Make sure to screw in the heatsink screws in a diagonal pattern. Also don't forget to lock the cpu fully by turning the flat head screw on the cpu socket to the locked position. However if your original processor worked fine again, then the new one could be a bad batch. Fake processors are very rare and are usually easy to spot (compare the pins and heatspreader).

Well I reinstalled and it seems to have lower temperatures.

Maybe what's happening is that as I keep using AS heat paste it gets to the fresher end of the tube.

I'm getting 51 with a constant fan. That's ok I guess.

I wish I could get mid 40's with no fan.

The T9xx processors like the T9300/T9500 run quite a bit cooler than the T7xx series. I have a T9500 in my T61 with Tuniq tx4, and it idles at 31 celsius. T60 units are stuck with the older processors, though. Nevertheless, a T7200 is still a good bump from a T2300, especially for ~$10.

If I could get a post 07 t61 locally, I'd love to get a processor that runs that cool.

T61's are really tough to find.

Because most of them are dead.

You already have some good upgrades in your T60. You could try something besides AS5, but I doubt you will see much difference. Maybe a P series CPU, but I don't recall if they are compatible with the older chipset on the T60. They run nice and cool.

Other than that, it might be time to retire that machine to backup duty and pick up a T410 or newer.

ROTFLMAO. What an excellent response, even if not completely on target when it comes to truth.

Unfortunately, none of these will work in a T60/p.
