Why do most people out of this forum hate IBM?

#1 Post by Navck » Mon May 30, 2005 11:50 pm

They're very biased on their opinion
I've heard "OVERPRICED SELLOUT"
"TITANIUM JUNK"
"IT CANT ALIENWARE ME"

Anyone noticing that? I was recently personally attacked for recomending someone IBM...

Ah, its just a popular trend to flame the first user who says "IBM" as an suggestion for a laptop out of this forum.. For me anyways, because I'm the one being flamed.

While I disagree with the premise that "most" people here "hate" IBM, it's worth noting that using this forum to form an opinion about ThinkPads or IBM in general is dangerous. Apart from the many ThinkPad fans who hang out here, I'd think that most visitors come here because they have issues or problems with their ThinkPads or with IBM. Those who are happy and who don't need support beyond what they get from IBM have little reason to come here. I'd think that group represents by far the majority of ThinkPad users. Any impression one might get here to the contrary is highly skewed by the minority whose experiences have been less than ideal.

The question is how many of those people who hate Thinkpads have actually owned one? I think that is more important question. Just ask that question if anyone says anything about TPs. They may say, "well friend has one and this and that yada yada yada".... Then just ignore them.

From my experience, > 95% of people who used TPs love them.

Some may think TPs are way over rated until they actually use one long term. It's like BMWs (I like to compare TPs to bimmers). Before I owned one, I thought they were unreliable over priced german piece of crap, when I always drove Japanese cars. One day I went for a test drive, I was so impressed that I signed the paper and drove one home the same day. Never regretted the decision.

TPs makes me feel the same way.

That's a bad analogy since a lot of BMWs are unreliable.

Overpriced? No, I think my ThinkPad was worth it. Sellout? Well, I think IBM did sell out, and I am honest in that opinion.

ThinkPads are not 'junk' though, and Alienware is merely a repainted Sager.

Actually, the Alienware is hated on the forums I go to
Its actually the "DELL XPS GEN 2 MEGA 1337TACULAR LAPGAMERTOP" they talk about...
Alienware is also an generic term in my view for "gaming laptop"...

Nice real example, and ask me if you want the entire webpage

He's probably buying IBM because he thinks it makes him look 1337er or something.

My stance hasn't changed. Why do you care about comments like that? Ignore them. They're just trolling.

Instead, examine the specifications of different models from different companies, read the reviews and comments from multiple forums separating the wheat from the chaff, compare them to your needs, and make your own decisions.

This is partly why, whenever someone comes in asking if they should buy not-a-TP vs TP and then proceeds to extol the virtues of the not-a-TP, I always advise them to buy the not-a-TP. My experience has been that people already have their mind made up about things, and my talking them into something else usually has an unhappy ending.

Actually I ask them a question on memory... (256+512 vs 512+512)
I get flamed in return as soon as I mentioned "This is for a Thinkpad I'm planning for"
If I said "THIS IS DA DELL I WAN"
They would welcome me with open arms...

The general opinion I hear about Thinkpads is not hating them, more "nice machines but I can't afford them, and they're not that great for games".

"Most" people on this list seem to be rather fond of their ThinkPads, with many owning more than one. That doesn't sound like a bunch of people who hate the product to me.
"An atheist is just somebody who feels about Yahweh the way any decent Christian feels about Thor or Baal or the golden calf. As has been said before, we are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

You know, if you chose another brand you could get it for much cheaper. But you're only loyal to IBM so you're screwed in the [censored].
