Updater vs Installer?

At various times I felt the updater program made wrong decisions regarding dowloads, and it had some problems with the downloads themselves.

I have completely discontinued using it. And just in case uninstalled it from my computer. For a while I would downlad from the website and use the old installer.

Now I am using the new Software installer (3.11.0505) to download and install.

Is there any real use for the Updater anymore? Is my decision to can it wise? Why weren't we advised to stop using it?

I think the updater was just phased out. Prior to the software installer, I never used the updater - just checked the file matrix overy so often to see what was new. Now, I use the software installer, but I don't automatically install everything it tells me to install!
