replacing display for Thinkpad T410

#1 Post by McDonnell » Mon May 18, 2015 9:50 am

Hi all,

One of my T410 got a broken display and as this is still my main travel pc I would like to buy a new panel, but I'm not sure which one. The broken one is a 1440x900 LED panel.

The reason I am asking is that I know there are different options for T410 but probably also different manufacturers. For example: I have 2 T500's one with a SHARP WUXGA display and one with a Samsung, The difference is huge, so I would like to avoid buying the wrong panel.

Can any one recommend a good panel for T410?

OK, I have found this LG panel, Lp141wp3-tla1. I'm not sure which display I have right now but as its broken I need a replacement.

Thing is I also see quite a few Samsung panels, but guess I will just go for LG WXGA+ one.

Anyone know if there will be a difference between LG WXGA+ LED and Samsung WXGA+ LED? (Still thinking about the huge difference on my T500 :-) ).

I honestly don't know. But maybe you could look for reviews of the 2 panels, or short of that maybe user feedback on the vendor site?

Are you searching e-bay or elsewhere?
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.
Old:
E6520, Precision M4400, D630, Latitude E6520
ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U
IBM Thinkpad X61T, T61, T43, X41T, T60, T41P, T42, T410, X301

I spend most of my time in Asia so I will proably just source the panel on taobao.

I have google'd the panel but haven't been able to find something. The T410 display is weak anyway so might aswell just go for LG panel and be over with it :-)

May be too late but...
If you go to ThinkWiki's display page. You can find that T410 can have 3 different WXGA+ LCD panels. 2 already have names - LG + Samsung ones. But 3nd - 42T0735 is very interesting LCD. If you place this FRU number to ebay finder (or simple google for it) you can find some lots with used LCDs. And (if it have photos) you can read model number. B141PW04. H/W:2A F/W:1. It was made by AUO.
Bad things:
Different HW versions of the same LCD have different connectors (made for dell), but have better brightness (you can go to panelook.com).
I haven't find specs or basic characteristics of samsung and LG panels so it is hard to compare them all. Old generation Samsung and LG panels have worse contrast ratio than this AUO.
Good? thing:
When i was searching panelook for 14.1" WXGA+ panels i have found only one non TN. It is G141C1-L01. It is not IPS, but MVA with 1000:1 contrast ratio and good viewing angles. It have glare (not matte) surface. And it was made for dell - with different connector. And i even don't know if ThinkPad accepts this LCD when adaptor will be made.
I have find other interesting Inolux TN panel (with 1:500 contrast and matte surface) but with uncompatible connector.

Haven't ordered anything yet :-)

Very interesting, but it seems my only easy option is to go with one of the panels listed on Thinkwiki. Would you expect the AUO to be better than LG or Samsung?

The AUO is listed as with a 500:1 contrast which I should think is better than the LG and Samsung. I will see if I can find an A+ panel somewhere.

This is starting to be interesting I have found this adapter for T410, it says G141C1-L01 replace LP141WP3 TLA1 adapter for lenovo T410:

http://www.iccfl.com/product_info.php?products_id=21398

I guess this means I might be able to fit in the G141C1-L01 if I buy this adapter.

UPDATE: OK, I'm gonna go ahead and buy the G141C1-L01 panel and the adapter. Once I have done the swap and confirmed it works I will post some pictures. I know many love the T400 and T410 for being 16:10 so it might have interest for others.

Anyways my display is broken and a $50 repair + upgrade seems fair.
Adapter: $6
G141C1-L01 MVA panel: $45

Well it seems sourcing the G141C1-L01 panel might not be as easy as I thought.

It might also be that this adapter works for other of the panels used in Dell. I will update in this thread once I find a panel :)

update:

OK, I got the display and adapter but seems the thinkpad won't recognize the display. I can see its lit and i can see differences when I turning brightness up and down. The computer can start and works with external display, but the internal display remains black.

This might mean that even with an adapter this display isn't compatible. However I find that a bit strange.

Any ideas?

Do you have the datasheets for the original LCD and the G141C1-L01 LCD?
Compare the pin-outs from each screen and modify the new adapter if and as required.
If only one pin is different, it already may not work.

Any link for that adapter?
Any link for (which?) original LCD?

Quick check. If ThinkPad itself don't want it - lets try Linux. Can you boot up Linux distro (Ubuntu for example). And see if LCD can show some image.
Linux's XServer can use LCD with wrong EDID - like in this story.

I don't have the datasheets in hand.

The panels are:

Original: B141PW04. H/W:2A F/W:1 or LP141WP3 TLA1 ( Just tried on another T410 with the same results).

New panel: G141C1-L01

Adapter: http://www.iccfl.com/product_info.php?products_id=21398

I will try to boot it with linux and see if it can display anything.

Edit: Just tried to boot fedora workstation, I can hear login screen and enter password but no picture. I don't think this will be different in any other distro.

BAD things:(
Another question - after putting LP141WP3 TLA1 back have it worked without troubles?

Can you make some highres macro photos of LCD connector area of G141C1-L01 and other (native to T410) LCD and post links to this photos there? Lets try to point finger to the sky (predict) pinout of this panels. We can use LP141WP1 specs for reference.
