WTB or Trade for - Chromebooks

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Tue May 19, 2015 8:52 am

Hello all,

I've got 5 Chromebooks I use every day with my third graders, and over the summer I'd like to add more. Anybody got any lying around? Maybe you gave one to a family member who just didn't get it?

Let me know. I have a few Thinkpads lying around I could trade or add to cash if cash alone doesn't move you. Now remember, I teach school so you aren't dealing with Donald Trump here. :)

PM me and I can send you a list of the Thinkpads if you want to go that way. Mostly X,T, and R 60 series beasts.

Thanks,

David

David, have you thought about something like this?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad ... 1c4e634a90
I got one for $50.00, and there are some out there now for the same price. Battery life is fine, in un-tweaked form.
My son's school uses the Samsung, and the "normal" daily out of service hovers around 20% school wide. For my sons school, thats 140 laptops down per day! This is the 2nd year in a 3 year lease and HDD's are dropping like flys.
I have a recovery disc for this machine and even with only 2 gigs of memory it is plenty speedy.
Food for thought

You could also essentially turn those Thinkpads into Chromebooks by putting the Chromixium Linux Distribution on them ( http://chromixium.org/ ) or by customizing Linux yourself with Chrome or Chromium centered panel/dock. When v1.1 comes along I'll be doing just that.
Toshiba (93-98): t3400(ct), 3600ct, 610ct, 620ct, 660cdt, 490xcdt, 780cdm/dvd

IBM (95-06): 701c*(s) Butterfly, 600(e,x*), A31p*, T43(S*, p,+pS*)

Lenovo (07-12): t60h, T601pF*, x60t+, x61t+*,
W500, W700(ds), W701, x301*, x200t, x220t, x220*, W520*

Mac (04+11): iMac G4 20", MacBook Pro 17"

Thanks for the help guys. I've had the Chromebooks for two years and no problems at all. Can't say the same with the Thinkpads and the battery life difference is huge.

I'll try that linux distro this week.

Is that a chromebook with 4 hours battery or a Thinkpad you are referring to?

The Samsung Chromebooks I have go for about 3 days of heavy use or a week of light to normal use. I use my thinkpads plugged in because batteries cost so much for them given the amt of time they last.

I've missed a couple of the laptops you recommended on Ebay the last two days. I'm cheap. :)

Huh, the school uses the 303c12
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Chromeb ... 35ea5b84f6
I was more than a little underwhelmed.
8 hours max, school day and homework was about all you could use it.

I got the X500 Samsung from a Donors Choose grant for $100 each and they've been great. Our district is rolling some test Chromebooks out next year and I'm sure they'll buy the worst. /sarc

Okay, so I'm looking at using X60s with the Chromixium OS this coming year. They are durable and I can pick them up for a good price. Installing the OS on one this weekend and will play with it for a couple weeks. X60s are dirt cheap and if it really works well, I could sell the Chromebooks I have and get two x60s for each one of those. Woo hoo! Thanks guys!
