2 external HD on T40

#1 Post by mrdarcy » Tue May 31, 2005 10:35 am

Hi folks,
I am using a Thinkpad T40 (2373-72A - out of date, I know :( ). It has a 40Gb HDD. I also have an external HDD of 40Gb. The problem is when I connect my friend's 60Gb external HDD, my Thinkpad will not recognize two of them at the same time. The same thing happens with my friend's Thinkpad G40.
Is there a solution for this?

I use two externals on my X, but one I always use with power (i.e., the drive enclosure has the option to have it plugged in to the mains as well as USB). The other external is a little 1.8", which only uses USB power.

From what i've read elsewhere (a USB forum, I think), most USB hard drives must have power because the power output from USB 2.0 on a laptop is rarely sufficient.

Also, it could be enclosure(s). Cheap ones are just that: cheap. :)

2k/XP might puke if the drive has a signature written to it, that identifies it as a drive letter identical to a drive letter already in use on your system. Find out what drive letter your friend assigned to the drive, and assign drive letters on your system such that the drive letter he used is available.
