What is hogging my T23 CPU?

#1 Post by Ted_E » Tue May 31, 2005 12:12 pm

My recently aquired ThinkPad T23 with eCS 1.2 _idles_ at 55 to 60% CPU usage right after booting with no app (that I know of) running. This results in performance far below what one would expect from this 1.2GHz machine. I have just discovered that if I print a page from either Mozilla or Papyrus the CPU utilization at idle drops to ~1.3% with resulting improvement in performance. Dragging and dropping a line of text on the printer doesn't reduce the idle CPU.

The printer is a Canon i850 using the IBM Omnien driver. I have yet to find another way to get rid of the CPU hog.

Has anyone else seen this or similar? Any ideas how to get rid of the hog without printing or having a printer attached?

I'm assuming you're running windows-

Press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del> then click Task Manager

Click the Processes tab then click the CPU coulmn twice.

Look for high numbers in the CPU column. Maybe one process maybe several togeather. Maybe a necessary function like updates. Once you ID the process(es) you can make decisions about how to proceed.

Did you try the latest OS/2 Power Management - SpeedStep & Enhanced SpeedStep Technology?

Download Description
This software package provides IBM's most current support for:
- Intel's SpeedStep technology for IBM ThinkPad T2x and T30 systems
- Intel's Enhanced SpeedStep technology for IBM ThinkPad T4x systems

The following IBM OS/2 operating system versions support the SpeedStep and Enhanced SpeedStep Technologies, when the appropriate OS/2 Fix Packs and device-driver support are applied.
- Warp 4 Convenience Pak Two Manufacturing Refresh
- Warp 4 Convenience Pak Two
- Warp 4 Convenience Pak One

Prerequisites
OS/2 Loader Support is a prerequisite for this support.

This device driver version is only available to customers with an active contract for Passport Advantage with Software Maintenance. If you have purchased a Passport Advantage contract, the terms and conditions of that contract will determine the services to which you are entitled. For Technical Information, please refer to the following sources:

1. Any README documentation contained within the driver.
2. Technical reference material shipped with your device / system,
3. The Users Guide to OS/2 Warp, and other reference material contained within the OS/2 Warp product,
4. The IBM Software home page for technical support information in your country.

cheers.
