X230 New display seems very bland in colours

#1 Post by PRAGUEGUY » Wed May 27, 2015 8:18 am

High all, my display on the x230 died. I got a replacement via warranty. The authorised service provider happened to have one on stock. They stated it is the one destined for my laptop
.
Upon startup, when I saw the Win 7 logo light up, I felt the colours were dead, compared to
the shining IPS colours I had been used to.
It did seem to be an IPS screen, as I could see everyghing even from a very small angle
from the side of the display.
I asked them to specifically check if it was IPS, and the answer was yes.
We agreed they would order another one, specifically for me...
Can anybody comment on this? any suggestion that newer displays can look so much worse?

I would feel it is no longer the same PC...At the moment I do not have the FRU but was told it is the correct one.

No display is identical. Every display is slightly different, even if it's the same model. Bland colors are to be expected on a display that does not cover the sRGB color space.

thanks...now I just wonder how I could ever find out if my original display did or did not cover the RGB colour space...for me, optically, the difference was huge. I may ask the store to give me the FRU of the display they took out of the laptop, also that of the new one...but I do not expect to buy a different display just because of the colours. I guess I will get used to the change and forget it...I rarely watch films. The colours on the original display had been brilliant though, it gave more enjoyment to using the laptop.

Verify display settings after the replace, is color depth set to 32 bit ? Also reset display settings in Intel display properties. It is strange because it is supposed to be LG.Display panel that are usually well calibrated by default, the color space is poor but that's not issue. What is the brightness level ?

The X230 IPS doesn't cover the sRGB color space. Obviously your original IPS didn't either. It might have had a different factory calibration however or have been a different revision. That could account for more significant changes. In any case I would recommend to use a color calibrator on your screen, that should fix any calibration issues, which the X220/X230 IPS displays definitely suffered from. (gamma values to high, way to much emphasis on green etc.)

That's not really how you should check. You should check vertical angles (top and bottom).

Thanks to all for replies. The service provider replaced the display with another one, stating it is the same FRU.
The issue is gone, visually I feel the display is identical to what I had before.
I deactivated power saving technologies in the graphics settings.
I suspect the first one was either faulty, badly set or not IPS...in the Device manager Monitors, it was called Intel 4000 something, and not "Wide wiewing angle High Density FlexView Display 1366x768..." as it was before, and as it is now with the second display.
My search on the web indicated you could have a non IPS display with the same FRU..I dont know I am confused.
Thankfully now the display is ok.

Most likely not IPS. Although I doubt the "Intel 4000 something" would be in the Device Manager under monitors.

You can, only if someone made a mistake and marked the wrong FRU for the display, or delivered the wrong FRU from the warehouse. I wouldn't trust the service provider much. Half of them have no clue as to actual difference between displays.

The display is good now - that's all that matters. :)
