My T40 is still dead. Maybe the time in the oven wasn't kind to the fuses or something? But that still wouldn't explain why it worked for a while...

I'll do a detailed report as soon as.
In my case i worked for 7-8minutes on pre heated oven at 180-190C (based on thermostat indicator not measured).
Temperature sufficient to desolder my previous mod serial connector

Yeah the T40s that sometimes power on, sometimes not-- have a solder issue. Baking the board doesn't always solve the problem. The fix would be to as others have said, desolder the chip, remove the existing solder (on both the chip and mobo), add some more on, and then melt it back down.

You could also try getting a heat gun and applying hot air under the chip that's suspect. A heat gun will allow a much hotter temperature in the desired concentrated area (whereas a stove is less ideal). The smell of cooking IBM isn't the greatest afterwards either.
