Or maybe an X250, but I don't want to buy one if an updated X260 will come out a month later.

Typically, most machines are updated or refreshed when Intel released their new CPU and chipset, though there are always a few models that buck the trend. Game changing CPUs don't come out often, the last being Sandy Bridge, so if you think the X250 is a good fit, delaying a purchase is probably not worth the wait.

Can the X200/X201 1280x800 screen be upgraded to the x200s/X201s 1440x900 screen by buying the part of eBay? If yes, what should I search for? Has anyone done it before?

You can swap the complete assembly from a X200s with WXGA+ to a X201. I have such a model...

I tried the same on my X200 and it didn't work. But I've read other users managed to do that, so maybe my X200 was too old or I overlooked something.
