If this were a problem issue, it would occur regularly, we would be all over it. So do as Thinker advised, and believe IBM was in full control of their actions.
Your logic is faulty. First, since they have procedures in place to keep screwups from happening, you presume they NEVER happen. That's not true. If it was true, they wouldn't be called screwups, but intentional acts.

Second, your logic could be used to give the exact opposite conclusion. A company like IBM, which seeks to always please its customers, would have procedures in place to make sure that an employee's data wasn't compromised. Furthermore, they would seek to limit confusion for their customers as much as possible. Since replacing one unit for another, without consultation or notice would cause confusion and possibly compromise data (perhaps he never backed it up), they would notify you, or at least put the data on the new machine. Since they DIDN'T notify you, it was obviously a mistake and you should call them up.

As Nonny said, stealing is stealing, regardless of the attempted justification.

Please. There are many companies that don't rip off their own employees unless they have PROOF of it. They don't just automatically assume that their employees are the ones stealing, and dock them pay.

Employees are often treated with a certain amount of respect in their jobs also. It sounds to me like you're the one making IBM to be the big bad corporation.

I'm just saying IBM will not miss the loss of a computer. A person will of course, but not IBM. I'm sure they've already got it configured into their cost basis that they will have to cover theft, and mistakes, and whatever else.

This being said, I STILL THINK you should figure out what's going on, instead of just holding on to the T42.

But morally, returning a T42 to them, will not be missed. They'll throw it in their enormous stockpile of overpriced T42's waiting to sell it to the next guy.

While for you, getting an upgrade to a T42 will make a HUGE impact, (at least it would for me).

That's the only reason I don't have a moral problem keeping something that was sent to me by mistake.

But, you have no way of know what will happen if you keep it, so I say figure out what's going on.

And, I don't think stealing is stealing. Stealing 10 dollars from a millionaire is really not a big deal, but stealing that from a homeless guy, or a little kid, they'll feel it in a big way.

That's all I'm saying.

You are so wrong, and that is such a shame in one so young. I sincerely hope that as you age you will come to understand what ethical behavior is.
