X220 dies when resuming from sleep

#1 Post by AJN » Mon Jun 01, 2015 12:45 am

Hello

My X220 started recently this strange behaviour. Few seconds after resuming from sleep power just goes off in a millisecond, no matter if it's on AC or battery. What could be the cause. SSD might not like sudden power loss :| Thank you for suggestions

Check Event log for possible BSOD and minidump file.

Well it took some time to occur again, I checked syslog and other files and there didn't seem to be anything special (I'm running Ubuntu). Some times this laptop fails to enter sleep too, indicator led goes on, but fan won't go off and battery must be removed to start it again. Motherboard is failing or something like that?

Could possibly be a driver issue. If you boot into a Linux live usb (linux mint for example), and the issue goes away, then it is most likely software related. Also, switch to a TTY terminal (ctrl + alt) + one of the F1 - F7 keys and login. Any driver issues from here on out are usually cast onto this screen, such as using the rfkill switch. If you resume from standby on this terminal, it may give you an error message that you can look up.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried that and terminal prints this when resuming from sleep:

[34699.643828] usbhid 2-1.4:1.0: can't add hid device: -71

There's nothing attached to any port, could be HW issue according to this discussion:

Sadly it could be a motherboard failure. Brace for that. Does it do it 100% of the time?

No, occasionally. It resumes from sleep normally actually, but after 6-12 seconds power just snaps off. I have Samsung SSD, I hope it doesn't go down with this laptop due these sudden stops :?

A year ago I dropped the machine on it's edge, and it took some damage:

Maybe motherboard has flexed and that's it with this. Thank you all for your time!
