W500, backlight or screen is buzzing at any setting less than max

#1 Post by Erare » Mon Jun 01, 2015 6:53 pm

I just bought a W500, there is a loud buzzing sound at any setting less than 15 (the max). Obviously I can't have the setting at max screen brightness all the time. Is there a fix to the buzzing? I tried installing the lastest drivers from ATI and it didn't help.

It's most likely the LCD inverter that's buzzing. I've had defective ones that did that way in the past.

Is this fixable by software? Or is this a hardware issue?

It's a hardware issue.

It's not really defective. The ferrite transformers tend to buzz if the glue holding the windings has loosened. It doesn't indicate any tendency to fail. One of my W500's has the buzz, but it doesn't bother me.
