Just got my new X40!
Just got my new X40!
I ordered it just over a week ago, and I got it today. Woo!! The laptop is way light. The jury is still out about its performance (the slow hard drive is definitely noticeable during high I/O activities). I had some initial reservations about the lack of a touchpad, but I'm finding the stick just fine.
Has anyone tried to use the whole security chip? Is it useful? Worth the trouble?

Congrats! What are the specs of your machine?
I looked into the security chip, but decided against it. I don't keep anything ultra-sensitive on my machine (just credit card info, passwords, banking details, etc.!) but I did put a power-on and hard disk password on it. Yes, can ultimately be defeated, but...
Enjoy that new machine

Specs
Here's the Specs:
Model: X40 2386
Pentium M LV 738 - 1.4 GHz / 2MB L2 / 400 Mhz FSB
256 MB (Popped in another 512MB from the laptop this is replacing)
40 GB
Bluetooth (Must have for me)
Ultrabase
8-Cell Battery
Intel 802.11 b/g
I have to say that the ultrabase seems like a "waste". Aside from the slot for a second drive, there isn't much. It seems like there is a lot of space left over that IBM could've used for other things: another battery, or even a third drive.
My next idea is to get a big SD card ~2GB, and fill it with the most commonly accessed files: maybe outlook and firefox. I'm hoping it will speed up start-up time, and reduce battery usage. Anyone else try this yet?

Re: Specs
I hope you like it. I love mine....would never buy a non ultraportable heheakao wrote: My next idea is to get a big SD card ~2GB, and fill it with the most commonly accessed files: maybe outlook and firefox. On mine I see no reason for this...the speed is fine and no way do I see a reason to spend the $ for a 2GB SD card

Whoa, I just found the new "Software Installer", and a lot of my drivers were out of date. Note to new owners, do not use the IBM Connector Updater. Find and download the Software Installer.
Anyhow, quick tests show:
5 second to get out of standby
15 seconds to get out of hibernate (I have hd password turned on)
I haven't tried bootup, but I think that probably varies a lot depending on what you have installed. For me, that includes Office and OneNote.

A complete startup (before I optimized it) was 3min. 42 seconds.dimon wrote:What are X40 start up times on:
a) coming out of complete shutdown (heard up to 1 min)?
b) coming out of hibernation?
c) coming out of standby?
Thanks!
P.S. Lets say you have a Word, Explorer and Windows Media Player opened.
After removing unnecesarry processes and using bootvis, and what not, I achieved 37 seconds.
