There will be no *50 series with good processors?
There will be no *50 series with good processors?
Intel has just released its broadwell's 47w processors, and non of the 47w or even the 28w processors support vpro, only 15w processors do.
Will this mean there will be no T550p or W550 ?

Dell is skipping Broadwell in favor of Skylake,
and perhaps Lenovo will do as well.

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
Yes, Lenovo is skipping Broadwell H CPUs. Broadwell ThinkPads are 100 % ULV, and it will stay like this. Skylake is already around in the fall, so nothing new until then I think.
Some details about Skylake here: http://www.thinkscopes.com/2015/05/inte ... eculation/

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
So will the *60 series be released in th Fall, you think? I wouldn't mind upgrading my X220, but I can't get anything with this combination:
Good trackpoint (buttons)
16gb memory option
High res IPS screen (at least 1080p)
No number pad (negates w541)
Non-U processor. I can live without a quad, but not U series
Sad days. Take my money!!

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
It looks like, at least in mobile, if you want a dual core, you're getting U series from here on out - the last full voltage mobile dual cores are Haswell, AFAIK (and Apple even switched away from full-voltage IVB to HSW-U (although the 28 W variant - that's another thing, there's still a higher voltage version of the U series parts, not just a 15 W version) with the Late 2013 13" MacBook Pro Retina). Otherwise, you're getting a quad core.
That said, one leak I've seen has indicated that there'll be an Iris Pro option on SKL-U, which will be quite interesting at 25 W.

I'd love a 14-15" Thinkpad with Iris Pro graphics instead of the craptastic Nvidia GPU's they keep giving us. I, however am bitter, and will assume that no Thinkpad will ship with Iris Pro.

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
One big thing is that Iris Pro isn't a thing on dual-cores, until Skylake. So, it's Intel that's the problem here, not Lenovo. And, it's not been available on the T540p because the T540p uses PGA CPUs (looking at how broad of a range Lenovo sells, it's no wonder they're using PGA for that), and the Iris Pro-based Haswells are only BGA.
However, as of Broadwell, PGA is dead, with BGA for mobile and some desktops, LGA only for desktops. So, I'd expect any quad core ThinkPads from here on out to have Iris Pro if they don't have a discrete option, at least available with higher-end CPUs.

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
Yeah, and there's the rub.
Why can't I have a dual core i5 with decent graphics that aren't full of NVS failsauce? Heat? Cost? Both? BFYTW? Iris Pro seems to be the answer to my dilemma: Good IGP GPU that doesn't suck. But apparently the tech gods, like the greek gods - like to torture man with things he can't have.
Le sigh.

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
And, Skylake-U (which is the only way to get a dual core, but you can get a 25 W "ULV" part) will have an Iris Pro option, so that will fix that.

That's just Iris, not Iris Pro.
Iris Pro has a 128 MiB eDRAM cache shared between the CPU and GPU, Iris does not.

Maybe I am not understanding something then. What is preventing OEM's from using Iris Pro GPU's in laptops?

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
With Haswell and Broadwell, it's only available on quad cores that are soldered to motherboards.
So, if you want a dual core, or you use socketed CPUs in your design, no Iris Pro for you. (Well, Broadwell in laptops isn't available soldered.)
With Skylake, everything laptop is soldered, and you can get a dual core with Iris Pro it seems.
So, basically, what's preventing OEMs from using it is if they want to offer a dual core, there's no Iris Pro part available. With Skylake, there will be, so they can offer it.

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
sigh... the soldering pisses me off, however by the time a board dies, it's generally cheap to replace. get a decent chip to start and upgrades will be pretty much meaningless.
Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
Yes, GT3 will be available this time with Dual-Core. However, Intel is even further expanding on their GPU portfolio by introducing a new GT4e variant, which will be much more powerful than GT3e and a whole class above the current Iris Pro GPUs. So Dual-Core is still not getting the full GPU potential (which also has to do with the limited TDP).bhtooefr wrote:With Haswell and Broadwell, it's only available on quad cores that are soldered to motherboards.

Indeed, all laptop CPUs in the future are going to be soldered on the board, and former Standard Voltage M CPUs are being discontinued very soon. They will be replaced by the all-soldered Skylake H / HQ / HK CPUs (H = Dual-Core, HQ = Quad-Core, HK = Quad-Core with open multiplier). High end Core i7 MQ CPUs are also being replaced by new Mobile Xeon CPUs.

Re: There will be no *50 series with good processors?
Well that is good news at least. I'd be totally happy with gt3 GPU. All I want is a GPU/CPU combo that doesn't run hot, works great in a 14" form-factor and has enough power for light - medium gaming. I don't game, but I can make use of the horsepower for other tasks - hence the requirement.
