T61 - WiFi not connecting after hibernation/shotdown

#1 Post by JesseKnows » Mon Jun 08, 2015 5:43 pm

I decided to experiment with Windows 10 on a T61. Everything installed well and works. I installed as an upgrade from Win7.

One issue though: the system cannot connect to WiFi after hibernation (or "shut down" which in Win10 is a flavor of hibernation). I need to "restart" every time. "repair" or switching the radio off via the hardware switch is not enough.
I have an Intel 4965ag WiFi card in, tried a different 4965agn and no improvement. The Intel drivers are the latest.
BIOS is "T6x-Dual-IDA_SATA-II_Whitelist_SLIC21_Thermal_Sensing_Error_ThinkPad_T61_T61p_BIOS_(2.29-1.08)".

Any suggestions short of a clean install?

Have you tried older wireless drivers? Booting into a linux live distro, such as Lubuntu, is also a quick way to test if the wireless works there.

The wireless had worked when I had Win7 on the device, so I do not believe a Linux Live distro would tell me much. Besides, as I understand it a live distro does not provide hibernation.

Again, WiFi does work after a complete boot, but not after hibernation or shutdown.

@JesseKnows this problem is well known since Windows 8 release. The cause of the problem is the lack of appropriate drivers for network adapter you have mentioned - I have had same problems on my wifes x61s. This situation only occurs when you use WIFI card with this particular chip (4965) so the quickest way to solve it would be replacing it with another card that use newer or older chip.

I fought this problem on my R61 and T60p (which finally died from heat exhaustion last week when trying to download the 10240 build.)

I largely cured it - with approximately 90% success - by turning off the check box "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Interestingly that option gets turned back on every Win10 build that gets installed.

It's in the network adapter properties under the Power tab.
