Why it's so hard to get T420/T430 non-s kits working
The reason for flickering (check this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmXKuObDZ4c) is the interference from main power supply, CPU power control and the power supply for the PCB itself, since those components are very close to each other and the space in T420 is so compact, enhanced shield won't work either. Javi-Jie has tried 4 layers PCB and there has been 5 revisions made so far and problem still persists (But improved a lot).

The kit is being picky on the motherboard as well. Some motherboard works fine with the kit even on the first version and with quad core CPU (like the one I had), some works fine with dual core CPU and not the Quad, and some just hate the kit so much

Having jumping wire as in the picture below can help but not completely resolve the problem
http://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y32 ... whnq1m.jpg
But, I can assure you that the kit will eventually come out, since a lot of investment has already been thrown into the project. There's no way for us to quit now... :/

Would this work with a T420 without nvidia graphics, by any chance?
And, do you have a link to a discussion as to how it works?

@bit_twiddler
you can tell from the picture I uploaded, the board is connected between screen and the port on mobo. The maker of this chip has written a detailed guide which I have no time to translate at the moment.

Regarding T420, no success has been reported so far. Maybe javi_jie will make one for T420/T430 in the future

So the 's' model only, interesting.
I presume I should get a LCD cable as well?
Oh, and I am interested in how they did that 2K screen mod...

Yeah ordinary T420/T430 have different pin-out than T420s/T430s
The kit includes a LCD cable. So you don't need one. I'll send you the translated guide on facebook
Also, the 2K screen mod is based on sacrificing the DP port on the ultrabase. And 2K screen mod is known to have some problems when connecting to external screens. Besides, high resolution under a **usable** windows (by usable I mean, before windows 8 ) is a pain in the [censored].
A FHD screen on T420s has similar DPI as a X61 SXGA+, which is just acceptable without changing text size

Hi there,

in the german forum there's much interest in this.....but the main question there...will there be a kit for the T420/ T430.

Me, i will be able to use the docking, so this mod wouldn't be something for me,...because the docking port will be going to be unusable with this mod...

or am i wrong, if yes, please correct me immediately,

sincerly,

Perhaps RMS can elaborate, but if the FHD mod is just a board between the motherboard and the LCD, then I don't see how it would affect docking capabilities. The 2k mod sounds similar to the mod that Leo Kim did on a 12" laptop (was it an X200?). In that case, he rerouted or tapped into the displayport out of the laptop to drive some kind of hi-res display (not sure if it was eDP or LVDS).

There is this thread from a few years ago on a German Thinkpad forum, don't know if it applies to the current situation, but it's interesting to read, nonetheless:

Yes there will. Kit for T420/T430 will be available soon. Check here and ebay frequently ;)
FHD 1080p mod does NOT require the sacrifice of display port, but 2K mod does at the moment.
Javie-Jie is also developing a kit for T420 that does not require the sacrifice of Display Port, however I doubt it will work well due to the limitation of LVDS

LVDS is ancient, so when you are looking at some new high resolution screens, you'd be expecting eDP

I would be just fine with FHD on a 14" laptop. But, I think I'll wait until I can get something
for a T420; not being able to take a big battery or a slice battery is too big of a drawback of
the T420s for my needs.

RMSMajestic, this is very good news. But please help me understand correctly a few things, as I followed through google.translate the 51nb.forum and I am not sure I got all things right, as for me the 2K's pain may be glorious in the end. So, could you detail some more on the items below?

Please correct or confirm my understanding:

2. The FHD upgrade can work on T420s only, regardless of integrated or dedicated graphics.

1. The 2K upgrade can work on T420s integrated graphics only. A supplemental question here: does it work at all with external screens?

The procedure of installing the board kit is the same, no soldering, no bios mod in both cases?

Thanks.

In the 2K mod the PPI may be higher, but it doesn't look all that bad when seeing the pictures - in the Taobao offer; and Windows 8.1 can scale quite ok with some assistance. Having good eyes is helping too.

I'd definitely be interested in a mod to get FHD and/or IPS in my T420 if ever it comes to fruition... the res on the screen is the ONLY reason I haven't started using it all the time in place of my trusty-old-WUXGA-T61p. :)

First thing I need to clarify, there are several people offering similar modifications on taobao. Methods may differ slightly.

Now I'll answer your questions:
2. Yes.
1. Currently, the 2K modification requires the sacrifice of Display Port on the Dock regardless of the method, so, soldering is required.
External screen is possible but a little bit dodgy. Gererally, it works, but you'd expect some problems.

Javie-Jie is working on 2K modification kit that does not require sacrificing Display Port, which should work better in theory.
But at the moment, I know no more information than you.

Regarding the PPI, I personally cannot accept the 2K screen on X1 Carbon... the T60p 15" UXGA is the highest PPI I can accept.

Also. the taobao listing you've posted tells nothing about the dedicated graphics. There's no affirmative answer.

Thanks for the clarifying and edifying reply. :).

The only thing now for me is finding the T420s with integrated graphics handily. However, I remember being quite comfortable with the X1 screen last time I've seen it. I will check it again as soon as I can, it may have been a lower res. However, being rather a high-dpi resolution fan, I will continue to pray and hope for steady hands and mind and time for Javie-Jie for the better 2K :).

I mentioned that taobao offer mainly because we have some examples of how the screen resolution looks (and I didn't find it all to tiny, but that's just my preference). Thanks for clarifying that it's aimed for integrated graphics.

In Windows 7 a FHD on a 14 inch seems quite a sweet spot, I've noticed too. And the flexibility of the dedicated graphics with a FHD is v e r y attractive. Returning to the high DPI side I've yet to see a FHD on the X250 (or a modded X220 for that matter), to weigh in - I come from a X61t with SXGA+, that's slightly above in DPI than the T60p UXGA. But Scalability will be better in Windows 10 I'm sure.

So, as already has been said, some math and investments are coming our way.The T420(s), the last Mohican of real keyboards, is looking mightily able again.
(Soundeffect: Hearing the Transformers Cartoon intro) 8)

Thanks for sharing this great hope that's becoming realized.

After researching cost of shipping TO China (for the 2K surgery), methinks that buying a FHD upgrade kit is very much worth it instead.
Color me extremely interested in purchasing a KIT, ASAP the next batch comes around. BTW, when would that be, most likely?

As for the 2K, waiting for the retrothinkpad should be worth it.

Color me extremely interested in purchasing a KIT, ASAP the next batch comes around. BTW, when would that be, most likely?

As for the 2K, waiting for the retrothinkpad should be worth it.
July.20th, this July. :) I've asked my friend to bring 10 more T420s/T430s and 15 non-s kits here.

Color me interested in a non-s kit as well. Want so badly.

Do you know which kit it'll be? Would prefer to keep the DP port, but beggars can't be choosers I guess. Thanks!

FHD 1080p mod does NOT require the sacrifice of display port, but 2K mod does at the moment.
Javie-Jie is also developing a kit for T420 that does not require the sacrifice of Display Port, however I doubt it will work well due to the limitation of LVDS

I choose to pick the kit that keeps the DP port XDD cos the one that sacrifice the DP port can be too much of a hassle, especially for a proxy like me

Also, there's some delays in production of non-s kits, so I have asked another friend of mine who's coming to the states on 29th to bring the kits...

It made my day to see that there is a 1080p IPS kit for the T420s/T430s! I'll be watching ebay!

Better watch here, cos this will be the first place I release information.
And also, the price on feebay is 50% more expensive, $75 (don't blame me... it's the bl**dy final value fee and transacaction fee of paypal :??: Also I'm taking more risks with non-forum members on ebay, which is reflected in the cost)

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. Appreciate all the help you've been giving here.

Count me in! $50 sounds peachy to me. I can provide Heat and ebay feedback if you're worried about selling to forum lurkers like me.

Does this mean we can expect non-S FHD kits on the 29th, or does that mean they're still being worked on? Not in any hurry here, just wondering how to interpret the above; I'm definitely still interested in one...

There is an 80% possibility that you will see non-s kits available on or shortly after the 29th
There had been some delays but kits are out now, only problem is whether or not I'd be able to get those shipped to my friend's place

Aah, "sizzling fireboxes"!
Itching to purchase the FHD screen already.
I'm thinking of the B140HAN01.3 14.0 Matte Edition for my T420s. From your ebay description it's listed as a compatible screen.
Ahem. "Full steam ahead," getting ready for the "steamworks" :D.

Counting the days, as to a prophetic expectation, but no worries, it shall come to pass.

Watching this space.

I kinda have a felling that this will sell as hotcakes, or as in Romanian, like hot bread.
