Nobody else has mentioned this anniversary of the start of legal history in the western world. When King John sealed the charter in 1215 it led to other charters and to the formation of a whole new system. Although most of Magna Carta has been overridden or abolished in the UK, most civilised countries still use its essence as the basis of law.
In this parish we have one event that is even older than Magna Carta, the "Tichborne Dole". For people in USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand it probably seems a mystery for anything to be that old. For us it is normal. It's an annual event. Held every 25th March, its history goes back to 1188, well before Magna Carta. Our church is even older with a pre-Norman Chancel.
Look it up, and visit if you can. The local pub does good beer and food. You can use your ThinkPad in the pub because they have free Wi-Fi.
OK, this is a bit of advertising for a village with fewer than 100 residents. I am Chairman of the Parish Council and we make no money from anything and we are all unpaid volunteers. We just love to have visitors who will respect our peaceful little corner of Hampshire and enjoy a view of the past in this hectic world.

Re: 800 years of Magna Carta
I was actually watching a short report about the anniversary today, and said to myself "Oh my it seems like it was just a few years ago..."killer wrote:Nobody else has mentioned this anniversary of the start of legal history in the western world.
All jokes aside, Magna Carta is definitely something worth remembering, for a variety of reasons.
You know, I might just take a ride to have a pint with you the next time I'm in Merry Old England - a trip that has been long since overdue - and see it for myself. Sure sounds like a lovely place. We just love to have visitors who will respect our peaceful little corner of Hampshire and enjoy a view of the past in this hectic world.
Enjoy!
