My X61 came with the WWAN card alongside the stock Wi-Fi card. When I upgraded the Wi-Fi card (with the middleton BIOS) I removed the WWAN card. That's when I saw the second fan, installed under the palmrest. It's a little loud when it spins, and it isn't doing much.
Turns out you can't remove it without the BIOS whining about it. I'm not okay with the beeping, and hitting escape to bypass it every boot. Does anyone have a fix for this?
Second fan is really annoying

Give your T43/T43p/R52/X41 the SATA it deserves! http://mikejmoffitt.com/sata

I would try to remove the fan, but keep the connector plugged in.
No clue on whether this will actually work, but that's the first thing that I'd attempt.
Good luck.

Re: Second fan is really annoying
I've got the EEPROM from the X61 without 2nd fan you sent me for the BIOS experiments (no luck with the video so far, unfortunately...sorry).
It should be possible to extract it with a Raspberry Pi just like the BIOS chip.
Let me see if I can dump it this evening, if so we should have an image with which to get rid of that warning.
The only problem is that several sources imply that the EEPROM has to remain attached to the motherboard while you read it and the one I've got is removed. I take that to mean the laptop sets the write protect to a state where you can read it...

U'll need a external programmer for that.
Alternatively, you can find those replacement modules on chinese taobao.
TBH, the secondary never bothered me much. Personally, I didn't find it loud and I didn't find it useful
