Intermittent T43 backlight issue

#1 Post by MrMaguire » Fri Jul 24, 2015 2:35 pm

I just picked up a really cheap T43. It's in nice condition, but it seems to have an issue with the LCD backlight, possibly.

I say this because I was playing around with it after installing Windows. I took a break and reactivated the display after Windows turned it off. The backlight came on for a split second and then shut off. Rebooting the laptop produced the same behaviour on the BIOS splash screen.

But then, I removed the battery, held down the power button for about 20 seconds and tried it again. The backlight came back on and has been working fine for about an hour now.

Also, the beeper and Bluetooth don't seem to work. They are both enabled in the BIOS.

My first thought is a weak or old CMOS battery. You probably should replace the CMOS battery and see how the T43 runs after that.

CMOS battery, huh? I'll look into that. For now the issue seems to be hiding from me. It's been running memtest86+ for 1 hour and 20 minutes with the backlight at full brightness, and so far it's holding up perfectly. Of course, now that I've put that in text, it'll probably fail.

The 20-second power button push produces a hard reset.
After that things usually work fine.
I don't think you have a backlight problem.

It's still working, so I guess the backlight and inverter are fine. But still, I wonder what happened. Perhaps the inverter retained some static power and immediately shut down?

The system beeper works, but it's not beeping when I hard shut the laptop off, or put it to sleep. And the Bluetooth still hasn't come to life.

Quick question: How exactly do I go about updating to the modded BIOS? Do I update to the latest official BIOS and then to the modded one? I had to install my own hard drive, and now the 2010 error is irritating me. :P

I just put in a new heat sink and wireless PCI card on my T43p. To flash the bios you use winflash. It's very easy to do. It's all self executing. It's all in the zip file with instructions.

I just successfully updated to the modded BIOS. No more 2010 error. :D The actual BIOS version seems to be the same.
