Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
Has anyone tried opening up the Lenovo T60 battery (I have the 9 cell extended one), to replace the lithium cells within? Mine now gives less than an hour of battery life. Was wondering whether it'd be better to buy a compatible battery online or have the cells within replaced.
What compatible parts can I buy to replace the cells?

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
Why not buy an original one? Now would be a good time, as 2015 is the last year that T60 batteries will be produced by lenovo. (since the last T500's shipped in 2010 if I'm not mistaken)

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
You can still find new genuine t500/w500 9 cell batteries that will work with t60 models. You can find them on eBay or ask here on the marketplace.
Don't bother opening up the battery. The plastic tabs that hold the case together break very easily, and you are very likely to trigger a switch or fuse that would disable the battery entirely.

Do not even try - I did
First the plastics are very difficult to disassemble neatly, but worse is, that the battery holds its own memory etc. If you succeed to connect new cells, the battery will not work. Maybe if one can ensure that the circuitry stays connected to voltage while the exchange takes place it could work, but its definitely not practical.

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
I didn't realise that T500 batteries were compatible with T60, will definitely consider that. Is the same true for the 6-cell ones that don't protrude? I don't use my laptop on the road much and it will fit in my small laptop bag much easily without the protruding part.

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
Correct, on the T60 the 6 cell does not protrude. Only the 9 cell does.

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
Can someone please recommend an eBay seller. I already bought once from a Chinese source. Couple of months later, the battery randomly drains and barely holds an hour of charge which is still less that my old original but defunct battery.

I have a T500 that was manufactured in September 2010. I looked at the date and was a bit shocked because the T410/T510 series was in full swing by that date.600X wrote:Why not buy an original one? I live in India, would any of you recommend me to buy from one of the following links?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-9Cell-Origi ... 25a5f3b644
http://www.ebay.com/itm/85Wh-100-Genuin ... 1ea18dcbec
The second seller has almost twice as many ratings as the first and is from Hong Kong, not China. Is that worth the extra $17!! Hmm...

Those look good to me. If you buy one make sure you have the Lenovo battery app so you can check the status of the battery and cycle count when you get it.shahidt wrote:I live in India, would any of you recommend me to buy from one of the following links?

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
Got reply from one... 2014. When did they stop manufacturing these?
Also, I can get someone to buy a battery for me from the US, and found this listing...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/For-IBM-T60-Len ... 2ee37a11f3
Not sure whether it is the original one or compatible. Those sellers with more than 17000 ratings don't let you ask a question.

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
If you have any friends in Delhi, just have someone grab it from Nehru Place or buy one of the local eBay. They have some decent chinese batteries and should give a couple of hours of backup at the least.shahidt wrote:Got reply from one... 2014. When did they stop manufacturing these?

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
So I managed to find an authorized Lenovo seller who had a 6 cell from 2014. Considering I am not as mobile with my laptop as I used to be, I bought one.
Can you folks now give me tips on making this battery last as long as possible. What can I do other than perhaps calibrate the battery once a month.

Re: Replace Lithium Cells in a T60 battery
Go into power manager 6 (Lenovo Power Manager) and go into advanced settings. It's set to basic as a default so switch it to advanced. Click on the battery tab and click battery maintenance. Change charge threshold to optimized for battery lifespan.
