any DIY / How To's to install wireless 600e internal Ant?

#1 Post by cyborg » Thu Jun 02, 2005 10:55 am

im currently using a regular linksys pc card to access my wireless network. is there any way i can install a different type card (ones without any thing sticking out the sides) ? ive heard of some ppl installing antennas inside their lcds. im not sure if they are doing this to get boost or maybe they dont want anything sticking out the sides as well.. if someone can point me in the right way, id appreciate it. thanks!

I tried this with my T22, several different ways, and my conclusion is that it isn't worth the hassle. I didn't get a performance boost over my Belkin G PC card. I ended up doing what I should have done in the first place, got a 3Com Xjack wifi b/g PC card, which takes care of the sticking out of the side issue when you're not using wireless.

3Com has a $25 rebate going on right now, if you buy from ebuyer.com, your price after rebate, shipped, will be only $35. Search the forum for Xjack to see what people say about the card.

But if you are determined to do an internal antenna, the easiest way is to install the following antennas. http://store.mrtechus.com/acnoan.html I put one inside the left hinge and one in an available space under the palmrest. I had to figure out a way to route the antenna leads to the underside of the motherboard, it will be different for the 600 I'm sure. (I also tried routing IBM antennas into the T22 LCD cover, which was a real b**ch, and actually gave somewhat worse perfromance, to my surprise.)

Like I said, I ended up going with the Xjack and using the minipci for the modem and LAN.

I vote with Nolonemo. Get the 3Com X-Jack card.

I installed antennae into my 600X, but I have to agree with the others.

It's not worth the trouble. The lid isn't designed for WiFi so the signal is very weak. It was a real PITA to disassemble, and another pain to try to route the cables.

At least the 600X has a MiniPCI slot, so you can just pop in a MiniPCI WiFi card. The 600E does not have that slot, so there's not even anywhere to add the card. You'd still have to take up a CardBus slot... so it hardly seems useful.
