[x201s] Thermal Pad replacement?

#1 Post by X20055 » Tue Jul 28, 2015 2:46 am

Does anyone know which thermal pad should I use in x201s? What thinckness? Perhaps I could just use thermal grease like on CPU? The problem was I was replacing paste and that pad thing seemed to be completely torn into pieces. I have bought such used laptop

I don't have an X201s, but 1mm thickness should be fine.
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts

fujipoly is good thermal pad, get 6 W/mk. UK based seller on ebay can sell you some. There are also two more is 11W/mk and pricy 14W/mk. Higher rating the better heat transfer. These fujipoly pads are soft but not too much and just right.

Funny thing thermal compounds is as bad too, just be careful not to apply too much.

The other thermal pads out there is usually less than that like and some are too hard or too fragile.

Perhaps I should buy copper plate instead and apply grease on both sides? But then what thinckness of such plate? They sell 0.5/0.6/0.8/1.0mm ones here. Should I even care or just go for cheapest pad?

The problem was, I had normal temperatures in idle and small load(measured just by OS) but after trying few stress tests I found out that temperature doesn't disperse properly. In something like 75% load temperatures jumped to 70-80 Celcius/25W but after I stopped tests they remained there. After 15 minutes they were still at 68-69 Celcius while different laptop running same test side by side cooled down to normal idle temperatures/Wattage in 2 minutes.

CPU gets the thermal grease, the chipset usually takes about 1 to 0.8 mm copper shim but be sure contact is fully parallel with the chipset's silicon die.
This is what you would like or fujipoly pad, note I rather prefer 1mm 11W/mk fujipoly pad for flexing abilities on the chipset due to chipset's retention lugs are so long and thin.
