T41 - Is Windows 7 the highest it can go?
Is Windows 7/32 the latest/highest Microsoft OS a T41 can run?
Pardon me, I've been absent for a while, or else I'd know the answer.
Searching came up with some only an inconclusive insight (this post being one example: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=114712).
I'm also asking in the the slim change Windows 8 or Windows 10 have (astonishingly) become more accommodating of older hardware.

Yes. Windows 8 and up require pae, which is only available on t43 units. Windows 7 would not run well on a t41. On a high spec t43, the performance is passable, but is not anything to cheer about.
Stick with xp or lightweight Linux distros on these machines.

lightweight Linux distros, ... thanks, glad I asked before jumping into this.

I wouldn't ever 'stick with XP' (unsecure and unsupported), or try to convince someone to run Linux.brchan wrote:Stick with xp or lightweight Linux distros on these machines.
Many of the T40-T42 owners installed an SSD and are still using those laptops daily with Win7 .... slower than a T60? ... obviously .... but still faster than a T43 with an HDD (IMHO).

As much of a T43p buff as I am, I'd rather be running a T42p with a SSD than a T43p with a HDD presuming a W7 realm. And yes, I've had both running at one time not so long ago.
If one wants to stick with XP...that's a whole another ballgame. As is anything *nix.

What about a T43/p with SATA-mod and SSD, that should be way faster than any T40/T41/T42 with SSD.

That's as fast as any T4x - T50 notwithstanding - will *ever* go. The difference in sequential reads/writes is 30% or more.RealBlackStuff wrote:What about a T43/p with SATA-mod and SSD, that should be way faster than any T40/T41/T42 with SSD.
However - given that it's T41 that we're discussing here - if OP is really in love with their system, mSATA + adapter will do just fine.

Getting Lubuntu running on the T43 is way easier than Windows 7. And it runs far better as well. Convert here.GACrabill wrote:I wouldn't ever 'stick with XP' (unsecure and unsupported), or try to convince someone to run Linux.brchan wrote:Stick with xp or lightweight Linux distros on these machines.
