Is the t440(the simplest one) a good choice?

#1 Post by educastro » Wed Jul 29, 2015 9:42 pm

I found the Thinkpad t440, the simplest one with only 4GB of RAM, Intel i3, 1368x768 screen, etc for US$300 and I'm thinking about getting it. Is it a good choice? I'll mainly use it for software development with Java and Ruby, mostly on Linux but I also want to install Windows 10. I already have a new MacBook so this one won't be my main computer and I can also put 120GB of SSD and 8GB of RAM on it. What do you think? t440s is much more expensive :/

The price is good, the screen resolution it is not, at least not for me. Another thing, it doesn't have physical trackpoint buttons, you have to click/press on trackpad (these buttons are back with T450). So, it's up to you.

if that is the 15w i3 without turbo boost, that is fairly slow,
the clickpad touchpad is also heavily criticized, but some people seems to think it is usable.

up to you if you can live with the above.

Welcome to the Forum.
1368x768 is the crappiest resolution for anybody doing programming, writing or spreadsheets.
You'll want at least 1440x900 or 1680x1050.
People who do real WORK, instead of gaming and watching videos, need TALL screens, not wide screens.
That's why the former 4:3 ratio screens at 1400x1050 (SXGA+) or 1600x1200 (UXGA) were (and still are) so popular.
Furthermore, T430 and T440 series have the most abominable keyboards and touchpads that you could possibly imagine, AVOID!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I set up T440(p) units with the awful, awful clickpad for a school last year... I would NEVER recommend anyone buy these after working with them. Keyboard wasn't as bad as I thought (still nowhere near as good as the classic style), but the clickpad... just... awful.

I'd argue that the amount in question would be far better spent on a T420 or T430, depending on one's preference when it comes to the keyboard.

$300 buys a *very* nice T420 these days, and a SB i5 - let alone i7 - will beat the living daylight out of that Hotwell i3 in any type of remotely serious use.

My $0.02 only...

I bought a month old T440, i5 4300U cheap on ebay, so cheap that I didn't hesitate to buy the T450 clickpad, a new SSD and 8GB of RAM.

I used the original T440 touchpad for a few weeks and had started to get used to it but it still felt just too "flappy" and lacked the precision and tactile feedback I'm used to having from the physical keys. It made all the difference when I got round to fitting the T450 touchpad, ahhh what a relief.

I was hoping it might have had 4GB of onboard RAM and an internal battery, but I was out of luck , apart from the processor and a 6 cell battery it's a base model.

In my opinion I would buy it but only in the case you can find an i5 model and budget in a new T450 touchpad.
