Think pad X60s

#1 Post by Johnuready » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:06 am

I have been given a think pad x60s but it will not boot. I think the disc has been wiped.

I can use the blue button and open the bios.

It came with no discs.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the thinkpads.com forum.

You most probably need to install an operating system on it. Does it show "Operating System not found" after the BIOS screen?

Hello and welcome to Forums.

Normally F1 is used to go to the BIOS but Blue Button is ok.
If you dont see HDD in boot order - 90% it means it is absent.
But you can see it with your eyes - Google for "Thinkpad X60s HMM" or use link "HMM" above and find "ThinkPad X60, X60s, X61, X61s". Find out how to open HDD bay and check what you get there.

Ideas:
You need 2.5" SATA HDD (or SSD) (and may be HDD caddy and rubber rails). And you need USB cdrom drive or USB flash stick to install new OS to new HDD.

thanks for all your help. It needed to boot with operating system. Had spare copy of XP but got caught up after loading XP with no wireless drivers. Now purchased a new copy of windows 7 complete that should load over XP and I hope solve all problems. Coming Tuesday. Sounds right?

That sounds good. Windows 7 should find most (if not all) all the drivers for that laptop. After that you should be OK with it.

Once you get your copy of Windows 7 installed. Go to the Lenovo website and download the Lenovo software update utility. That finds most of the drivers those the x6x series Thinkpads often times require manual installation of some drivers.

Yes it does (as long as you don't open too many browser-tabs, or run too many programs concurrently).

ONLY 32-bit operating systems will run on an x60s.
64-bit systems will NOT run.

i.e. make sure your windows 7 is 32-bit.
