I just put Windows 10 on my T61

#1 Post by Hans Gruber » Thu Aug 06, 2015 8:01 am

The upgrade went very smooth with 2.7GB of data. I had the Windows 10 preview on a T410s. I will give my opinion and update this thread after a few days. My T6100 has 4GB of ram a T8300 and 120GB SSD.

Moderator edit: Moved thread from the T6x-forum to the Windows 10 forum.

Good to hear! In your report, please include what internal hardware you are using (CPU, GPU, Wireless Card, etc), and if you experience any driver issues in Device Manager. I've been tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 and then clean install (tied to your motherboard's hardware ID), but I've been hesitant because of Intel's lack of support for their Wifi Link 5300 AGN.

This was my first Thinkpad to be eligible for the Windows 10 upgrade. The others are in the queue. I am only planning to upgrade one machine to Windows 10 for at least a couple of months just to test it out. My T61 has integrated intel graphics. I upgraded the T7500 2ghz processor to a T8300 2.4ghz Penryn. I upgraded the wifi to intel 4965AGN when I got the machine.

So far there are no driver issues with Windows 10. I am impressed with how the upgrade process worked. Fingerprint reader worked on first Windows 10 boot. Power manager is there, access connections are there. There were 3 or 4 processes in task manager that Windows 10 said I didn't need but none were driver issues.

Yes, both the trackpoint and trackpad work. I use both in Widows 10.

I forgot to list that my T61 has integrated graphics. This is my only low end screen that I have in my collection, 1280x800. This came with a 80GB HDD and 2GB of ram and T7500 2.0Ghz processor. I put in a 120GB SSD, T8300 (2.4ghz), 4965AGN wireless card, 2 X 2GB of ram. It's a 14.1" widescreen.

The T61 has more than enough power to run Windows 10. I always recommend SSD drives on any build.

Hmm... well one reason why I may not leave Windows 10 on my ThinkPads is that the new Windows 10 metro interface doesn't work with the scrolling function. What's your opinion on that being broken in Windows 10?

(I'm not sure if the new thinkpads have this fixed in the newer drivers)

Stand corrected, the touchpad works with scrolling. The touchpoint with the middle mouse button still does not scroll on Windows 10. I have so many different machine types that I have not had time to test them out extensively.

Just upgraded a T61 to 10 from 7. Fairly complicated process, upgrade failed a couple of times, finally I got it to work resulting in an activated system using the MS media creation tool. Imediately I did a fresh install using the reset option so now it is running smoothly. It had the notorious Intel 3945abg network adapter, so I changed that to the Atheros version which functions OK under Win 8.1 and 10.
