X60 Tablet and Windows 10
Windows 8.1 has started nagging me about upgrading my ThinkPad X60 Tablet to Windows 10. Has anybody already given it a try? How did it go?
Thought this thread might be a good place to store our collective experiences.

Re: X60 Tablet and Windows 10
I did. I downloaded the upgrade image creation program from MS and let it create a USB upgrade thumb drive. (I upgraded from Win 7.) FWIW, I upgraded the X60 with 3 GB of RAM before taking it from XP to W7. It will hold 4 GB, but the BIOS will only access 3 GB if you max it out.
As far as I can tell, it worked just fine. I'm still testing and have found only a very few things that needed upgrading or slight tweaking. I use Paragon Backup & Recovery for imaging out the OS partition to a USB drive. I had an incompatible version, but version 14 works just fine. The OSD for volume no longer works, but the volume buttons still do. The OSD for the little night light doesn't work, but the light does. The OSD for screen brightness is gone, too - but evidently MS has included their own. It's small, vertical and in the upper-left corner. I'm going to poke around on the Lenovo site and see if there are new drivers. I wouldn't expect so - these are old machines - but it's worth a shot. Still, that's small potatoes to me.
Other things: Browser stuff - I use Firefox. All the bookmarks came over intact and in the same order they were in before the upgrade. Same for IE. My Firefox saved passwords came over, too. All my WiFi connections came over just fine, along with all networked and local printers.
I use Classic Shell to get it back to the "Windows Classic" option from XP. I hate what MS did to the Start menu with 7, and Metro makes me want to choke them. (Geezer alert here - I've been using computers since the early 80s.) I upgraded Classic Shell and it's working fine.
I have a couple of high-end data utilities that we use at work. I have them on the X60 just to experiment/test with. One of them wouldn't come up as licensed, so I need to place a call to the vendor to ask about that. It starts just fine, but the licensing is somehow hosed. Still, this is $$$ enterprise software, so I doubt if you'll trip over that.
W10 runs some *ancient* programs that I just knew couldn't possibly work. It gave a warning about needing some compatibility/run-time files and asked if I wanted to install them. Sure, why not? And bam - the ancient programs just fired right up. Impressive.
If/when you do this, get on a wired ethernet connection and be prepared for abysmal performance as it downloads all manner of updates on the first complete OS load. I have a 60 Gb cable modem connection, and it took a good 45 minutes for it to settle down and ask for the reboot. Also, you can't disable Automatic Updates without going into the Group Policy Editor. I always disable that, since I don't want to fire it up on my portable WiFi hotspot, then have it eat up my data plan as it pulls down some massive upgrade in the background.
You get 30 days to back it out, too. After that, it's supposed to purge the image of your current OS it makes before starting things.
Overall, I'm impressed. I've *always* been a wipe-and-load kind of guy when it comes to dinking with the OS. I've just seen way too many MS in-place upgrades go in the ditch, but they appear to have gotten in right with W10.

Re: X60 Tablet and Windows 10
Here's my experience of upgrading an X60s to Win10 - nearly everything works OK. Here's what I did:
1. Back-up all files and settings.
2. Follow the Microsoft upgrade procedure from Win7 to Win10 - this ensures that your machine is activated for 'free' Win10. (Win10 doesn't use product keys - it validates your machine instead.)
3. Do a clean re-install of Win10 using the Microsoft procedure - this will re-format your hard disc. (This is important otherwise just doing the in-situ upgrade will cause problems.)
4. Load the following drivers manually:
- SoundMAX audio driver http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/downloads/ds000984
- Lenovo Power management Driver for Win10 http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/downloads/migr-4gxpeg
- Lenovo Hotkey Driver for Win10 http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/downloads/ds029026 (MUST be installed in Win7 Compatibility mode)
What doesn't work:
- The speaker mute and volume up/down buttons, although they do work on my external USB keyboard. Also can use the controls in the System Tray.
- The little LED ThinkLight for night-time keyboard usage.
- The central scrolling button doesn't work in some applications, although it does in my Firefox browser which is probably the most important.
- The Lenovo Thinkvantage System Update app doesn't support Win10 on the X60s, but fortunately, apart from the 3 drivers above, everything else you need is installed by Windows.
If anyone has found fixes for the above, I'd love to know. Other than that, with 3GB RAM and a 120GB SSD, my little X60s hums along very nicely!

Well, the Tablet versions don't have the Thinklight so it's not an issue.Duck_Cottage wrote:The little LED ThinkLight for night-time keyboard usage.

In broad strokes, it involves unpacking the Ultranav driver, then force-installing it in Device Manager.

Re: X60 Tablet and Windows 10
This MS FAQ might help the understanding. After 1511 there's a command prompt that you can run and it will show the W7 or W8 PRODUCT KEY that was used for your "digital entitlement". My W10 wouldn't activate using it and after a phone call and allowing MS to remotely confirm they provided me with a W10 Product Key. The machine involved would need a valid W7 or greater Activation. I understand that if it's not you're advised and W UPDATES no longer work. Don't know - don't intend to tryBillMorrow wrote:first, welcome to the thinkpads forum..Duck_Cottage wrote:Here's my experience of upgrading an X60s to Win10 - nearly everything works OK. Run the setup.exe of the Hotkey Features Integration in C/DRIVERS/WIN/HOTKEY again in Windows 7 compatibility mode. The included System Interface Driver will not install otherwise.Duck_Cottage wrote: What doesn't work:

At present, if you have Win7 or Win8/8.1 Microsoft is offering a free upgrade to Win10. When you do this, MS activates your machine as being properly licensed for Win10 without a product key - if you check in Win10 Settings/Activation, it says: "Product Key: Windows 10 on this device is activated with a digital entitlement'. Thus, when you then do a clean re-install you don't need a product key - you simply 'Skip' when prompted.
Best wishes

Re: X60 Tablet and Windows 10
After the FALL UPDATE 1511
Using the COMMAND PROMPT (ADMIN PRIV) and entering this script "wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey" should generate the old/original COA and according to my reads that should work for ACTIVATION.

Yeh...already tried that and it made no difference...well, it did install the System Interface Driver correctly which did enable most of the hotkeys, but it didn't activate the mute/volume buttons on my X60s.wileE wrote:Run the setup.exe of the Hotkey Features Integration in C/DRIVERS/WIN/HOTKEY again in Windows 7 compatibility mode. My X60s has a little LED light at the top edge of the screen activated by Fn/PgUp...isn't this the ThinkLight?axur-delmeria wrote:Well, the Tablet versions don't have the Thinklight so it's not an issue.Duck_Cottage wrote:The little LED ThinkLight for night-time keyboard usage.

On a non-tablet, yes.
Re: X60 Tablet and Windows 10
I sucessfully upgraded my x60t to Windows 10. Almost everything works fine except for finger touching. My pen works fine after installing wacom drivers. But still when touching my finger it doesn't work. I saw films on YT showing that function working fine. What else do i need to install to get it work?
