M10 Long fan installation

#1 Post by s0larian » Fri Jun 03, 2005 9:43 am

I have a question about the installment of the Long Fan M10:

There is a pink sheet covering a black layer and a copper sheet (this part of the fan covers the GPU). The Hardware Maintainence Manual says for M10, that it has NOT a plastic sheet, but for the regular Long Fan (not M10) it says to peel the plastic sheet.

No my question, just to make sure: I don't have to remove the pink layer for installment, right?

is it sticky? :) if so, its a termal pad... then you dont need to remove it... if its a sticker ... yes then i would remove it... unless you want a melted TP

The M10 is a fan covering the CPU and the graphics chip. This chip is designed to work without direct cooling for the models coming with the normal fan. However, the reason why some people consider upgrading is the way better fan motor of the M10. I think the normal fan has lousy bearings causing sometimes an annoying sound. After replacement the fan on my T41 it was neary soundless even at medium speed.

Yes, there should be no issue at all.

By the way: To get the M10 was really the right decision. No comparison to the accelarating noisy regular Long Fan in my T40p. I should have done this already 2 years ago.

I'm currently using the Short fan actually. Will it really make a difference (it's kinda expensive). And also...my fan is already really quiet, except it never shuts off, which is why I want it to change. Would it make a difference?

Will it make a difference on the always on fan?

My gpu (radeon 7500) in my T42 is the reason the fan is running, so I am considering the M10.

Will it fit? Will it help lowering the gpu temp, so the fan shuts off?

My cpu is 38C and GPU 47C, fan always on.

First of all, WHERE can I purchase the M10? Does anyone have a link?

Second, that pink sheet does need to be on and making contact with the GPU. I say this as this is the standard manufacturing process of IBM/Lenovo.
