he says depending on computer it can be done on any type or ssd. My(Thinkpad x300) is set in bios-sata-COMPATIBILITY. Theres a option for me to pick AHCi.Has anyone done this before?is it ok to do?Dont want to get a blue screen of death but if i do can i get into bios and set it back to compatibility? Thanks.

If you change from ACHI to compatibility mode or vice versa you have to reinstall your OS. It can be easily done in the bios. If you switch it without reinstalling it, your OS will not boot. If you switch it back to the way it was installed, it will boot.

If you're running a SSD, you want AHCI. If not then it's not a huge deal.

You can switch to AHCI, press F8 to enter safe mode and then load proper AHCI driver from Intel's website followed by a re-boot. It *should* work.

Good luck.

AHCI drivers don't get loaded if the OS is installed in the Compatibility mode.

If you go AHCI, have to edit in registry then change to AHCI in bios, the intel driver will reinstall automatically.

google is your friend on how to do this registry editing to AHCI.

Please read carefully Readme for IMSM Thinkpad Package.
Especially second part of "[Windows XP] CLEAN INSTALL".
I have done this only once, and only for XP on T60, but it worked well.
So you can try it.

I found this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci

In right-side pane, look for a DWORD "Start". Double-click on it and set its value to 0 (That's zero and not alphabet O).

Mine was already set to value 0.

The simple solution is always a clean install or reinstall.

Lucky that things worked out for you and that is exactly what is needed. AHCI and other features in hardware driver for storage is much features than plain.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection.
