windows 10 privacy status

#1 Post by thinkpadcollection » Sat Aug 22, 2015 6:18 pm

Had microsoft retracted the lack of privacy features on windows 10 yet? If not, still not interested since my dad's computer is offering upgrade to 10. Told dad no currently.

No they haven't. It's quite an invasion imo. I would strongly recommend your father not getting the Windows 10 poison. Unless:

- He is prepared to get the following tattoos: "I let Microsoft track me 24/7, I am hip", "Privacy is so 2014" and the classic "I've got nothing to hide, so nothing to fear" in very visible ink.
- He starts a blog in which he advocates why people should embrace having no privacy and why Microsofts secretive and invasive tactics are actually for the best.
- He actively will do his best to label anyone opposing Windows 10's route both online as IRL as unhip scaremongers and naysayers.
- He decides he will spend 20 minutes a day, every day from now on, at Starbucks holding his premium brand laptop (which falls apart after 2 years, complete with oversized Touchpad, magnetic latches and, yes, DNA scan) in plain sight for everyone to see while Tweeting "Omg, so yummy the late they make here".
- He makes 30 selfies a day

If your father is not committed to do the above, he should not go Windows 10.

Heh.

I could had borrowed a 1 year old w8.1 toshiba notebook that is so fragile and usb ports that can kill my window installation usb stick and notebook's had to be reformatted again if usb stick was nudged by accident during early part of win 7 startup installation. Also access panel to ram and HD is broken in few places and is now held in place with tape, cracked/broken vents. I pushed owner to install legit OEM win 7 instead and I have not heard anything complaints about that. :)

I'm sitting on the fence because microsoft is bound to be pushed hard and remove all this "malware" features in some near future due to swelling discontent of users.

Highly unlikely as in order to get things like Cortana to work as people seem to want you have to allow the OS to know all about you. As it seems a lot of ppl want these features, the privacy issues are here to stay, The best to hope for is a clear and reliable way to switch the stuff off if you don't want it.

Windows users will swallow everything Microsoft throws at them. They won't revoke privacy breaches, if you want to use new Windows, then accept 24/7 surveillance, it's "to improve your experience" after all.

There are apps for limiting/eliminating Windows 10 spying features, but they are largely un-vetted. There is always a chance that by installing something to shut down Microsoft's attempts to track/spy/sell you that you will end up installing some other piece of spyware or malware.

There is an open source app discussed on ZDnet: http://www.zdnet.com/article/want-to-li ... -for-that/

Why do you use brackets? Do you think they have other intentions as improving your experience perhaps?

Not only will Windows users swallow everything Microsoft throws at them, they'll even cook a nice meal for it and give Microsoft some pocket money on it's way out. Ain't that a treat?

I chose to install Win 10 because I have to be the 'help desk' for my wife and my 86 year old mother in law. I need to understand it enough to be able to help them when they eventually install it.

I was asked as part of the installation if I wanted to be tracked. I clicked on 'No' and that's that. Nothing scarier than a smartphone asking for location info.

I believe that you'd need to do some further research on the subject matter, old friend...

Rofl, a smartphone is as leaky as it can get. Don't you follow news about Android and such? Every week new exploits are found. There is nothing smart about smartphones

I hear a rumor that the enterprise edition is 'safe' regarding privacy issues.
The US gov uses it and I was told they needed their data to be discreet as possible.
But getting a COA or enterprise disk may be too tough for the effort.
