The most heavily damaged Thinkpad I've seen

#1 Post by Sudevan » Sun Aug 23, 2015 11:40 pm

This item on eBay caught my attention. It is the most heavily damaged Thinkpad I've seen. I am not sure what happened to the machine to make it so brutally damaged. And yet, the chap who posted it on eBay states that it works! That, if true, has to be a glowing testament to the strength of the outside covers of these machines.

It almost seems like some nasty wet stuff, like paper or some liquid has been put on top of it.

Didn't we once see a post here about some guy who had a fire in his flat, and afterwards he found his Thinkpad, half burned, melted and wet, but still working? I think there was a picture showing the laptop displaying the Win7 logon screen.

Hullo Bjorn,

No I haven't seen the picture of the fire-damaged machine, but the one I just posted reminded me of something that had been burned, especially since the outer skin seems to have melted partially.

My impression as well.

Given the zero-feedback-seller and a fairly vague description, I'd question the machine's working status in its present condition, though.

The guy is lying through his back teeth as well!
His fantasy claims:
Processor Speed: 2.00GHz
Memory: 2GB
Operating System: Windows 7

That machine is either a T20/T21/T22 with max. CPU = 1GHz and max. RAM = 512MB
or a T23 with max. CPU = 1.2GHz and max. RAM = 1GB
Anything newer than XP will bring those machines down!

And BTW, if he lost the charger, and it has no battery, how could he claim "it works fine"?

Quoted for Truth.

What's wrong:
1. The size and position of the middle trackpoint button
2. no touchpad,
3. no web browsing and Windows keys

And a whole lot of other things.

This seller has no ratings, incorrect specs, only 2 photos, and is trying to sell what looks to be a fire damaged 16+ year old laptop for $30??? Very sketchy.

I just threw up a $5 bid on the off chance it still has a COA sticker and it's legible. At worst I'll try pulling the hard drive and recovering the Windows product key via a .vbs script. Yes, there is the distinct aroma of mendacity surrounding this computer and the seller, but for $5 I just want to see it. :)

:) RealBlackSuff :)

I am surprised the description of this ebay item does not say "LAB-TOP"... Usually these kind of listings do... :)

Agree that it's most likely a T2x system. It also appears to have a non-US (AZERTY) keyboard from the very blurry photo. Also, it's not really "$5" as the shipping charge is listed as $30.60 (at least to me on the Left Coast) via USPS Priority.

I bet the seller found this in the sewer whilst looking for dessert

Edit: I was about to ask the hillbilly in question if I could come round take a look at it. But unfortunately "this seller is not able to respond to your question.". Luckily I hadn't bought my flight ticket to Atlanta yet, so no money lost.

RBS, Haha, that is a good one, hermaphrodite hillbilly!

As for the errors of the eBay fellow, I had not taken a close look at the keyboard, I shall go back and look. The pictures are rather blurry, though. By the way, I too had a fleeting thought that I should pick this machine up just to see it!

I snagged a 7x0 series Thinkpad from a recycler years ago that was pretty much crushed (top cover was shattered and there was a hole you could see the LCD screen back, bottom was cracked also). The thing booted up and ran fine, shocked the LCD worked.

That machine is bad and the seller should feel bad.

If it were mine, I'd take it to the local electronics recycler and be done with it.
