T42 error code 0199 - password retry count exceeded HELP PLS

#1 Post by fedupwithT42 » Sat Jun 04, 2005 7:42 am

Would appreciate help from anyone who has experienced similar problem.

I have Think Pad T42 which now has error code 0199 System Security: IMB Security Password retry count exceeded F1 setup.

I typed what I thoughtwas administrator password - after third attempt got locked out and cannot now get into machine to do anything. Will let me get into Bios but only to do user things. When machine is turned on it boots straight into security error screen.

Will recovery cds resolve this problem or is there another way round??

Pls help as soon as poss thanks DEE

Nope, recovery CDs won't help. The error is flagged in the hardware. You'll need to call IBM but typically they say you'll need a new motherboard. If you can prove you bought that particular computer recently and they have the serial number, etc, on file, they may be able to help you.

I believe I'd noticed postings on eBay for companies that provide this service (with proof of ownership) - might want to check there. I don't know if this is snake oil in certain cases as I have no experience with them personally - does anyone here? Run a scan on ebay for 'thinkpad password' and you'll get a bunch of hits.

Good luck...

T42 code 0199 - password retry count exceeded - SOLUTION

#5 Post by fedupwithT42 » Sat Jun 11, 2005 8:14 am

thanks to wolfman for your help. There is a company on Ebay called password solutions - they are brilliant. I ordered the chip for the T42 in the UK on Wednesday, it arrived from Germany on Friday and laptop is now up and running again. They supply you with the Chip and the fixing instructions along with detailed diagram, you just need to have someone to solder it in for you if you cant do it yourself. Thanks again for the advice on where to look.
