Can I run 64bit Windows with T60 with T5500 Core 2 Duo?

#1 Post by Muse » Wed Sep 16, 2015 1:01 pm

I have always thought the answer is yes, but I've never tried installing a 64bit OS. So, in upgrading my Win7 Home Premium 32bit T60 to Windows 10, I'm wondering if I have the option to install 64bit or if I'm limited to 32bit.

CPU-z indicates that the CPU supports these instructions: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, EM64T

This page [ http://www.howtogeek.com/228042/how-to- ... indows-10/ ] suggests that the CPU may not support NX, a requirement, and says I may need to enable that in the BIOS, is rather unclear what I would look for. I'm running 2.26 BIOS right now.

Thanks for your reply.

You can as the CPU will support it. However, the chipset is limited to 3 GB of RAM so there's no benefit to go with a 64 bit OS. If anything it's a detriment in my book.

The 64 bit OS is more secure than the 32 bit OS. Not that security ever really mattered but that is neither here nor there.

You'll be fine. The entire Core 2 Duo line is 64-bit capable.

Regarding NX, look for a BIOS setting that mentions "Execute Disable" or "XD". NX stands for "No eXecute" and is also referred to as "eXecute Disable".

I'll probably stick with 32bit. I have an app I use a fair amount that won't run in 64bit. I think there's an upgrade I may be able to do on that app, but I haven't looked into it too much. Would require a bunch of data conversion, not sure I want to go that route any time soon. A lot of computer stuff on my plate right now, my desktop fried recently, either the motherboard or PSU. The Win10 upgrade I'm hoping will stop freezes on the T60, a definite priority issue.
