Upgrading --> x220 to a x250?

#1 Post by Timpel_800 » Fri Sep 18, 2015 4:33 am

Hello,
I'm using a x220 i5 tablet with IPS screen.
The laptop runs fine, and i'm very happy with it, but my eye felt on the x250 and now I cant stop thinking about it :)

My main concern is the battery life of the x220, which runs for about 3 hours, and thats pretty short for college and so. I'm not a fan of bringing the adapter because that adds a lot of bulk to the backpack.

I bought the tablet version of the x220 for the screen, the x220 laptop was hardly avaibable on the second hand market with the IPS screen.
Now, the same thing happens, the x250 is for sale second hand for a good price (I wont buy a new laptop, period), but only coming with the TN screen. (usually business laptops I guess).
I wonder if the TN screen these days are comparable or even better then the IPS screen i'm using now?

Or should I buy a new 9 cell battery and stick with the x220 for some while...?

I'd get a new battery, much cheaper!
And the X250 doesn't do all that much more than an X220.

My "twee cent" only.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I find I get 5-6 hours with the 9-cell battery using my x220 with the IPS screen. A bit less if I'm running a lot of heavy-duty statistical analyses or video conferencing.

I've been using an x240 at work and hate the keyboard/trackpad, but the x250 is better, I think. The x240 has really remarkable battery life compared to my x220 with the small battery.

If it were me, I'd just go for the bigger battery and suck it up weight-wise. That money can go to repaying student loans!

thanks for the replies. I guess you make a good point.
I'm also worried about the keyboard, because the x220 keyboard, i'm using the page fwd/back buttons all the time. But some backlit would also be nice.. :)

I've been looking at replacement batteries and seen there's a huge price gap between the lenovo oem batteries and the China made ones. But I think I'll give the latter a try. Hard to go wrong for 30 dollars and no shipping costs right...

I always buy OEM batteries.

I've purchased 3rd party batteries many times in the past and without fail, they all either didn't work or failed within 6 months.

I'm saving my money for next gen to see if they improve some more or hoping to see what's up with the "Retro" ThinkPad.

Having used an X250, I can say I was very let down. I saw the return to the buttons on the trackpoint and was happy, but they totally blew it and the hinge point is reversed! Why?? The keyboard is very upsetting too. It's not just "it's an island keyboard" but rather the action on this one is the worst I've used in a ThinkPad. The X230 one, for reference, was alright and tolerable. This one, however, made me completely change my mind about wanting an X250. I'd wait up for a "Retro" revamp or at least see if the new iteration will be better.

Rather than buy a new battery, get the battery slice. It doesn't add a lot of weight and it gets you boatloads of power.
