Driver still loaded in memory...

#1 Post by MikalE » Thu Sep 24, 2015 8:20 am

This morning I disconnected my external 2TB drive from my T500 and plugged it back in to my T510. The drive was not recognized even though you could hear the 'clunk' Windows sound of plugging in a USB device.

After I looked around in the Device Manager I found this message "Drive not recognized because the device driver is still loaded in memory" This is the first time I've seen this, and the first time I've had trouble with any system recognizing the drive after a hot swap. I didn't actually see this message in the DM, I don't remember where it popped up.

I ended up rebooting the system and then the drive appeared.

I searched for a way to clear the memory without rebooting and stumbled across a rundll32 command that is ran from a folder created on the desktop. I don't know if it works yet as I've not had this happen again yet.

Anyone know why Windows 7 wouldn't flush this driver from the system memory after unplugging it?

Did you use "Safely Remove Hardware" by right-clicking on the USB-icon?
Probably not...

No because that feature is not enabled. If you look around you will see it's not required to use that when not enabled.
