What to replace in X200s to make it an X201s?

X200, X201, X220 (including equivalent tablet models) and X300, X301 series specific matters only.

What to replace in X200s to make it an X201s?

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Tue Oct 06, 2015 7:30 am

Am I right in thinking that if I replace the following parts in an X200s with their X201s equivalents, I've got an X201s in everything except the number below the screen and the labels on the base?

* System board
* Sound-I/O board
* RAM (use faster RAM)

And of course upgrade the hard disk?

If I'm missing anything, please let me know. Thanks!

Three points in reference to your post above:

1) No need to change sound board if you will not change the base, since there will be no space for second speaker, so no point in a sound board which supports two internal speakers. The X200s sound board will work with the X201s motherboard.

2) Need to change palm rest IF you are using a fingerprint reader on the X200s and you want it on the X201s also. The X200s fingerprint reader will not connect to the X201s motherboard.

3) No reason to change the hard drive, unless you have reasons other than the new motherboard for wanting a different hard drive. (You will, of course, need to update drivers on whatever operating system you are running.)

Good luck!

Thanks for this - I forgot about the palm rest/fingerprint issue and should have mentioned it.

I mentioned the sound card because I *think* the microphone is very faint with the X200s sound card, but not with the X201s sound card. I'm talking about the X201s card, not the X201 card - the X201s card is a drop-in replacement for the X200s card, and only supports one speaker, just like the X200s card.

I don't think there is any functional difference between the two sound boards you mention, but use the X201s board if you know that its microphone behaves better. Perhaps someone else here knows for sure if there is a difference ...

The X201s has a LED backlight, not the X200s' CCFL backlight.

Na-ah!
The X200s with WXGA+ has LED-backlight.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
