Network

#1 Post by think9 » Sun Jun 05, 2005 5:34 am

WinXP-Professional, SP2, on T42. Have a peer2peer network with 3 computers on a Netgear router (MR814v2).

1. How do I find out what is my "network name"?

2. I can get on the internet; but I can't see any computer on the network -- including this T42 . When I click on My Network Places | View Wrokgroup Computers (on this T42), I get the following error message:

****
Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.
*****

I am the only user on this PC; and therefore I am logged in as User1, automatically.

How do I log in as Administrator? And how do I give User1 permisssion? Or is it really some other problem?

Separately, I am typing this post in IE6.0.29; and it stays on top of all other windows -- won't let other windows to come in front of it. The only way I can see the other windows is to minimize IE. Is that the behaviour of forum.thinkpads.com? Or the behaviour of IE? And can I change it so that other windows can come to the front without minimizing IE?

TIA

Hi, Firstly I think that you are asking network questions in a T Series forum, never a great idea, I imagine that this question will ne moved but nonetheless.

>WinXP-Professional, SP2, on T42. Have a peer2peer network with 3 >computers on a Netgear router (MR814v2).

If you have more than 2 computers there is no point in having a Peer to Peer network. Use your Routers "DHCP Server" functionality to generate individual IP's to each of your machines and verify that the Router is the gateway.

>1. How do I find out what is my "network name"?
Right click "My Computer", select properties, select Computer Name, click the "change" button.
Make sure that all three of your computersare using the same "Workgroup". The name you type here is irrelevant as long as all machines use the same name

The domain name is only usefull if you have a properly configured Domain Server on your network.

See question 1, also make sure that EVERY user on the network has a Password and ensure the "File and Printer sharing" has been activatdon each machine.

>I am the only user on this PC; and therefore I am logged in as User1, >automatically.

Never a good idea.

Click Start, Run and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, and click Ok. . Check Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer option, and click Ok.

>How do I log in as Administrator? And how do I give User1 permisssion? >Or is it really some other problem?

Ctrl-Alt-Del , Log Off,
Type "Administrator" for the Username and the Password as required

No that is NOT normal behavior, could be for many reasons, it would be difficult to determine the cause with so little information, but anyway.

1 : Verify that your AntiVirus, AntiSpyware is up to date.
2 ; Use Firefox instead, this is the easiest solution.

PS - No offense, but most of these questions can be resolved quite easily with a little bit of "Googling".

Two things to check:
1. With SP2 the firewalls are automatically enabled, and this can preclude connection. Check the firewall settings or disable temporarily to see if that is the issue.
2. Make sure the Workgroup name is the same on all machines. I use WORKGROUP, but MSHOME is also used by Microsoft, and I see this error frequently.
