T440 - New internal battery not detected

#1 Post by Recife » Thu Oct 15, 2015 5:40 pm

Any thoughts? Just fitted a new internal battery to my T440 but it is not being detected properly. Previously it only had the external six cell and a blanking plate in place of the internal battery.

I've tried a number of googled suggestions such as:

- Turning off, remover mains cable, taking the external battery out, holding down the power button for 30 seconds.
- Deleting the ACPI power thingy from device manager and restarting with/without the external battery.
- Taking the external battery out unplugging the external battery, holding down the power button for 30 seconds.

To no avail!

An interesting observation is the fact that you can turn it on without the external battery or mains power cable, so clearly using the internal battery, but it shows up as "Unknown" and doesn't appear to charge.

What battery did you replace it with? i.e. Genuine Lenovo and the proper FRU/Part No.

Thanks for the reply, I bought this one from Aliexpress:

It claims to be FRU P/N 45N1111

That seems to be Genuine enough, although the 'AliExpress' had me  for a while. Have you installed the 'Lenovo Power Management Driver'? and run HWinfo (Hardware Info) software, look under Battery with the external battery attached. See what it says there for the Internal battery.

P.S. A long shot I guess but see if there is any option under BIOS about disabling/enabling internal battery.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Lenovo Power Management only worked when I installed an older Windows 7 version and altered the compatability in Properties

I ran HWinfo and it showed battery #1 (External Battery) all good, Sanyo, 6 cell etc. Battery #0 just showed up blank with no further information.

When I checked the official FRU list for my model: 20B7 SOOROO it only shows a part number for the dummy blanking plate that goes in place of the internal battery but no option for ann actual internal battery. If the battery itself is not the problem then I'm starting to wonder if Power Bridge is somehow disabled on the motherboard.

Another interesting observation is that the option to disable the internal battery and turn off the laptop is now available, with the new internal battery fitted.

The FRU list of T440 (20B7) does mention the internal battery.

The exact parts that show up for your model to you are the ones it came with from manufacturer originally so it will mention the dummy blanking plate there. I also don't think it would be a disabled power bridge issue, if it is, it should be an option present in BIOS. Are you sure nothing is showing undetected under 'Device Manager'?

Power Management driver does show up for Lenovo T440 on their site, for Windows 8, 8.1 as well as Windows 10:

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Both batteries show up in Device Manager. As for the Power Manager Driver I had to play around to get it to work in compatability mode, hopefully that's not just me being retarded as there seems to be a lot of information/complaints about this driver.

I've in contact with the battery seller and they are trying to come up with a solution. I'll probably offer to just send it back for a full refund if I don't find a solution within the buyer protection time.

Try flashing the bios with this battery in place?

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Thanks for the suggestion, I had previously updated the BIOS to version 2.35. I don't recall if the internal battery was plugged in when I did it. When I now try to flash the BIOS the install program recognises that the driver is the same and won't let me flash it again.

The battery vendor is asking me to double check the battery is is correctly plugged in and to check the switch next to the hard reset button. I Believe the switch they are referring to simply detects if the back cover if off as there is a corresponding tab on the back cover that will depress said switch.

The mystery remains unsolved, the seller does appear to be giving me my money back at least so I've decided to go all in and risk it one more time from a different seller.

Why don't you order it directly from Lenovo/IBM? It is listed as 55 USD, search the FRU here:

I think you should be able to order it to a US address using package forwarders. If you need help, PM me, I'll guide you.

Thanks for the suggestion, $55 is pretty reasonable.
