X220 doesn't see mSATA on restart

#1 Post by Davemci » Fri Oct 16, 2015 10:03 am

I installed a 128GB mSATA by cloning my existing drive using Acronis. If I power down the X220 then power it up it boots fine from the mSATA drive but if I restart the computer it doesn't see the mSATA. Anyone have a cure?

When I had the X220, circa 2011 and was using True Image 2010, it was recommended to do a clean install. then make an image, which you could back without issue. I did this quite a few times with my X220. The cloning software at the time wasn't good enough to clone over to the mSATA. I don't know what software you're using or if the newer stuff is any better, but if it works once, I suspect there's a setting somewhere that's messed up, though I have no idea what it would be.

it maybe an issue with the SSD, and not the laptop itself,
make sure the SSD have the latest firmware.

What is the SSD in question ?

I'm guessing it's a firmware issue too. The drive is branded Xi3 Storage I'm not sure who the real manufacture is. Firmware 620B according to the label.

My big scheme was to replace my 320GB HDD with a 120GB Patriot SSD. I didn't have a USB to SATA adapter so I cloned the 320GB to the Xi3 and then cloned the Xi3 to the Patriot. That worked pretty good but I ended up doing a clean install on the Patriot using the recovery partition. It was more time consuming installing 300 updates to Win 7 and a half hour on the phone to get OFFICE 2010 re-activated. So, I never intended to use the mSATA except as a possible data disk. I'm just curious why the mSATA worked fine after I powered up the computer but not if I restarted the computer.

I have seen similar issues with a SATA SSD, the Intel 530 SSD. it was solved by a firmware update.

It's either a firmware issue or a hardware issue on the SSD.

Have you tried restarting it again after the SSD is not detected?

I have an old HDD that's detected on every other restart--> cold start, good; after restart, not detected; restart again, detected again.

It was frustrating to use so I retired it.
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts

I updated the x220 bios and the Samsung Evo 850 msata 250GB runs very well.
x60 (T7200), 3.2GB ram & X200s (L9400), 8GB ram both have a 256GB EVO drive with bios flashed to Libreboot & running Parabola GNU/Linux
