T400 motherboard selection

#1 Post by brucehe » Fri Oct 23, 2015 5:54 pm

As I am unable to get this T400 with hybrid graphics stable with the Intel GPU and Windows 7 it is time to replace the motherboard.

I am trying to decide which board to replace it with, the hybrid graphics or the Intel graphics. Has the hybrid board historically had problems? I probably will sell the machine so thought someone might like the hybrid graphics and that it might be worth a few more dollars this way.

Is board selection dependent on display resolution? HMM does not seem to indicate so. My understanding is that LED back-light is not dependent on motherboard too.

Thanks,

Bruce

Like yours, I have hybrid graphics T500, except few comments that I find best ratio of performance and best runtime is this way:

T9600 (2.8GHz)
8GB
integrated motherboard or set to integrated mode in bios.

The T9600 give lot of graphics grunt for integrated graphics without wasting watts compared to using ATI. I know because had compared many settings using batteryinfoview utility looking at battery in wattage usage.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Re: T400 motherboard selection will this one work?

#4 Post by brucehe » Sun Oct 25, 2015 6:40 pm

I assume a R400 board will work in a T400. I am looking at a 63Y1181, intel board TPM non-AMT advertised as a T400 board replacement but listed in the HMM as a R400 board. Will it work to replace the hybrid board?

thanks,

Installed the 63Y1181 and it fit fine. I think the phone modem is on board so the one I pulled did not plug into the board however a modem shows in Device Manager. The board was brand new for $20 and runs fine. I decided to load this machine up with 8GB RAM, a SSD and a new keyboard. Hopefully it will have plenty of speed for running Quick-books for several years into the future.

Installed a Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB SSD and 8GB RAM. Run's well and feels good to give this machine a new life even though the only thing left is the LCD, battery and some plastics. Sent off to my daughter for farm booking keeping and newsletter publication.

I'm puzzled that people do this. I have *THREE* T400s (possibly even more) and I find the Intel one to be best for Windows 7 and allegedly the only one that works in Windows 10.

The hybrid ATI 3600 whatever has issues in Windows 7 and apparently, sucks wind in Windows 10. Moreso, the hybrid thing may never work in Windows 10.

For me, you can buy T400s for less than $50 sans hdd so its become the disposable laptop.

I have A W500, and i am using Windows 10 with the ATi Graphics chip enabled (switchable off).

For the T400, i think you migth as well go for the Intel one. The dGPU is simply too slow to be worth it IMO.

I finally caved in to the pop-up nags from MS to upgrade my Windows 7 Home Premium on my T400 to Windows 10.
And then get a very stubborn 0x80070005 error - that prevents the upgrade from even starting - and all the MS and forum solutions so far failed to offer a working fix (yes including trying Media Creation Tool and loading it from a DVD).
So I checked if the T400 is on Lenovo's Windows 10 compatibility list - turns out it's conspicuous by it's absence.

Has anyone out there succeeded in getting the T400 to upgrade to Windows 10?

I suggest you go and read the Windows 10 forum about T400/T500 with W10...
