#1 Post by PandorasThinkpad » Mon Nov 02, 2015 12:14 am

Hi there!

Just want to please you to list here those Thinkpad with Ethernetport and power plugin on the backside...

I start with my two main machines....and this is one fact why i own them...ethernet port and power plugin on the backside of the machine...

T420s
T410s

And, as i have already seen....the new workstations...P70 and P50...

So...

P50
P70

Any other real true facts which other thinkpad would have this? Please list them!!

THANKS,

PanDoRA

X220 Ultrabase have both LAN and power ports on backside. The number and placement of ports depends on motherboard design. You need a space for cooling.

That may be.....but on the first sight i like to have those thinkpad listed with this ports on the thinkpad itself and not on the dock.....well, cooling issue...why does it work with P50 and P70?

And why once backside, then left, then right, then again left....just stay on one place...at the backside of the thinkpad...;-)

Often enough, cooling + the battery take up most the space in the back - examples are T540p, T420, T420, T410 etc. . All of these models have the battery in the back. Very few models with the battery in the back have the room for Ethernet there.

Thats one of the reasons why T400s - T430s have Ethernet on the backside - their batteries sit in the front of the chassis, under the palmrest. The same is true for P50 and P70.

And yes, another factor are drop-down hinge designs - with these models, ports on the back are impossible. And also, convertibles like the ThinkPad Yoga models can´t feature ports on the back.

I am glad to have most ports on the sides. Ethernet is like the only port which I think might be better off positioned on the back.

So do we have already collected all models with such a well done design? Or are there still any other left?...

as i knew....no workstation (have to take W700 and W701 out!, they have!!) before P50 and P70 does have ethernet on the back....otherwise i would have tested such an machine...

W700 and W701 are workstation models, and they sure had Ethernet on the back. As well as W540 and W541. Oh, and T440p & T540p also have Ethernet in the back.

Did we collect all thinkpad until now...with such an port on the back?

Or are there any other?

On W520, T520 you could use this, since the RJ45 is all the way near the back on the right side.

That's new. Most common reason I've seen is that with desk queens the network cable gets in the way of the user when it's in the middle of a side.

For those that use a mouse right next to it, no cables on the right side is ideal. The few times I use an external mouse with the W520 when it's not docked I plug it in the rear USB 2.0 port.

The regular T430 also has an ethernet port on the back. And although the T410 doesn't, it does still have room for an RJ11 port there with the ethernet on the left side.

It's a pita to find such cable, because there is no clear standard on what is "left" and what is "right", neither is there a standard on what axis is "right / left" and what axis is "up / down"

I imagine the DIY parts to make such cables oneself are also available somewhere. But usually, confection cables are better anyway.

Hi and Thanks for now!

Question, have you already bought such an cable there?

If i buy an W520...i need such an cable with about 1 1/2 or 2 Meter length...much more like even 4 or 5 Meter..

So this will be not to find anywhere...i guess....

No, I haven't bought such a cable; I use my W520 mainly docked or on wifi / offline

I found another source though;
http://www.computercableinc.com/ccinc/p ... bl&id=8398
15 ft, that's ~4.5 meters.

And another one;
http://www.l-com.com/ethernet-cat5e-rig ... assemblies
That one is tricky though, since they have the axis mirrored.

Alternatively you could consider a simple coupler between the angled cable and a simple straight cable.

Another example. Apparently they have "left angle" "right angle" "right angle up" and "right angle down" types available.

Interestingly enough, the "depth" of all of these special pre-fab cables appears to be greater than what you could achieve if you crimped your own end onto a length of cable and pushed it to one side at an extreme. Granted, there's no stress relief mechanism with that approach...
