T60P - how to benchmark video playback

#1 Post by JayNYC » Mon Nov 02, 2015 7:44 am

Hi. I am running a T60P, with Windows 7-32bit Ultimate. I am experiencing stutter issues when watching both downloaded and streamed videos. I would like to determine the cause and solution. What is the best/easiest benchmarking tool I can run to know what framerates I get under "Thinkpad Default" vs. "Maximum Performance" power manager profiles?

This is my current driver fyi

I always had bad performance when using Google Chrome but Microsoft Internet Explorer was MUCH better. For a time Firefox was terrible as well and then suddenly became about as good as MS IE. I have also had good results using SMPlayer & SMTube which can be downloaded for free; just Google and you will find it easily.

I'm also seeing a lack of smoothness with iTunes downloaded/purchased movies. So I don't want to focus on browsers exclusively.

I find that content played from a good software player like Media Player Classic from the K-Lite Codec Pack Mega, is very smooth including 1080p 1920 x 1080 Bluray ripped files (mp4 mkv). http://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_c ... k_mega.htm

Have you installed and tried using those software players I mentioned? http://www.smtube.org/ and http://blog.smplayer.info/

The other thing you can try is to buy a cheap Broadcom BCM70015 PCI-e video decoding card, and install this in the WWAN slot inside you T60p. I have one in my X61 and that can play 1080p stuff ultra smoothly, just as good as on my desktop with its Intel Xeon X5492 and GeForce GTX550-Ti. Without the Broadcom card the X61 would completely fail to play those videos. I tried the same card in my Z61p which seems almost identical to your T60p, however the card did not work in my Z61p but it might in yours, and it is cheap enough to gamble on.
