42T0711 screen upgrade

#1 Post by Sticks » Tue Nov 03, 2015 3:40 pm

Hi all, firstly great site full of great infomation :) i just bought a secondhand x200 that is mint condition but has a smashed screen. I bought the laptop to learn about computing and the x200 is FSF approved so what better machine ! I made a massive school boy error it has a LED screen and I am reading that it is expensive and hassle to chance it to a affs / ips.

Is it worth the hassle? I read it drains the battery

Is it easy to mess up given that i can follow instructions but have no experince in doing this.

any help would be great.

p.s can i remove the screen all together and hook it up to a spare monitor ?

thanks in advance

If you insist on IPS...
Please do realize that their resolution is only a measly WXGA (1280x800).
There are also screens available with LED-backlight and WXGA+ (1440x900) resolution.
Those are usually found on the X200s or X201s models but machines with WXGA+ have NO webcam.
You can transfer the complete WXGA+ lid onto any X200 or X201.

My travel laptop is an X200s with WXGA+, SSD and a 9-cell battery, which gives me close to 9 hours.

Click on the HMM link at the top of this page, and download the complete manual for your machine.

Yes, you could remove the lid and hook up your machine to an external monitor.

thanks for the great info :)

I would be much prefer a wxga+ screen and have the larger resolution, I did as you said any DL'd the manual but I am a little confused.

It list the 42T0480 panel as a wxga+ but ebay sellers say it is 12870x800

my model of laptop is R92A5VP and the thinkpad site says I have a 42T0711 panel.

Can I to a straight swap with any WXGA+ panel ?

sorry if I sound ignorant just I am struggling here.

thanks for any light anyone can shed.

kindest regards

It's either:
1. They got the part number wrong
2. They don't know that it's 1440x900
my model of laptop is R92A5VP and the thinkpad site says I have a 42T0711 panel.

No. the WXGA+ needs a completely different lid assembly--top cover, bezel, antennas, flex cable, hinges, LCD panel, etc.
The WXGA+ model doesn't even support a webcam.

Check Chapter 10 of the X200's HMM. You'll notice that the LCD parts list for the WXGA and WXGA+ models are in different sections, and if you look at the diagrams, you'd see that the many of the parts look very different between the two.

Am I right in thinking that any 200s screen will fit my x200 I just will not have webcam ?

or do I need an adapter for them to fit ?

Define screen...
Do you mean LID or LCD?

Like I said before:
RealBlackStuff wrote:You can transfer the complete WXGA+ lid onto any X200 or X201.
Also: any LID from any X200/X201 model will fit onto any other X200/X201 model, as long as it's not a tablet.

But if you want to replace only the LCD, you will need an identical CCFL or LED LCD as your old one.
CCFL and LED backlight have different cabling, mounting and screens.

I can sell you such a LID with a 1440x900 LED-screen, BUT: it also has the complete rest of an X200s attached to it.

If you can wait that long: I should be back home (in Ireland) sometime next year...

Or if you have any UK friends doing Xmas shopping in the US, I could ship the laptop to their hotel after receiving PayPal payment...
They could bring it over without any duties or int'l shipping!

Hi!

First, the 42T0711 is, when you have an LP121WX3-TLC1....an quite good LED Display....even if its only in 1280x800....

for an AFFS panel you will need another cable and an inverter card...the AFFS panel has CCFL...but it is great from the colours and also from the viewing angles...if you have no problem to have an glossy display you may even chose an HV121WX4-110 or HV121WX5-100 instead of an HV121WX4-120.

The WXGA Display (1440x900) is quite good to work with....mostly everthing fits on the screen....but it has an slight blue touch...the colours are nothing worth and the viewing angles....not even better...

Me, owned everything...the X200s with 1440x900, an X201 with 1440x900 and then with AFFS (HV121WX4-120).

This are the simple facts,

sincerly,

My favorite Thinkpad:
T23 with 1,2 GHz PIII-M, CCFL SXGA+ (LG, 46L2495) (will now get LED Mod),
X200s, SL9400, 8GB Ram, AFFS (HV121WX4-120)
R500 with ATI Graphics, P8400, 8GB Ram and WSXGA+ (LP164W02(TL)(10))[if it once will get WUXGA?!]
T430s with I7, 16GB Ram and FHD Mod
