With the specs detailed in the subject line above, I got 211/247 read/write in Mbs without Rapid Mode
and 740/629 with Rapid Mode.
In Rapid Mode, I can hear the fan spinning harder. Is the higher fan speed normal for Rapid Mode and if not what can I do to tweak it down without damaging any hardware?

Those figures sound highly exaggerated!
Also, if (Middleton's) SATA II speed is limited to 300MB/s, how can you show more?
Is that Samsung Magician lying through its back teeth?
What are they in CrystalDiskMark?
If the fan spins up with Rapid Mode = ON, it is obviously overheating the system somewhere.
I think Rapid Mode may not be all that healthy, it holds a lot of data in a cache, before it writes. Bad idea!
There are plenty of negative reactions to that Samsung 840 EVO all over the web.
Also, it has TLC, low-class storage chips.

BTW I don't claim to be an expert in any of the software. The scores are from Magician. You will see in another thread I used HD Tune and came up with some so so numbers for speed without Rapid Mode. I turned it off because I want my T61 to last longer and am satisfied with its performance without. No need to hot rod it. However, if I could tweak it so there is no stress on the hardware I would not mind having Rapid Mode on. The difference is noticeable IMO.RealBlackStuff wrote:Those figures sound highly exaggerated!

Whatever on the reviews. I run the EVO on two different Thinkpads and they have been reliable and satisfied me in terms of speed improvement. And the price point was right at the time of purchase. You cant buy a Toyota and complain you don't have a Ferrari. I'm not a a hardware snob as it doesn't make sense to put something more expensive in an old notebook.

Magician actually benchmarks one's RAM when in Rapid mode.
Your writes are fine IMO but the reads are somewhat lower than what I'd expect. Presumably the drive is not properly tweaked.
840 EVO is known for a well-documented slowdown issue with reading older files. Samsung has issued a firmware fix which hasn't worked for everyone. I haven't seen any complaints regarding slow reads, though, so that's why I'm presuming that the drive is not optimally provisioned.
