t61 nVIDIA 140m w7 UPDATE SHOWS NEWER DRIVER???
Windows update shows a newer driver for the Nvidia card. This is newer than the one on the Lenovo driver site. Has anyone installed it and had problems. Any noticeable improvements?

Additional info:
Per Windows Update, a driver update dated ("published") 10/31/2014 is available for download.
Per Device Manager, I have installed a driver dated 5/31/2012 Version 8.17.12.9688. I believe this was the last one available via Lenovo's Thinkvantage Update. It's also been digitally signed by Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates. Here are the release notes: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/p ... d804ww.txt

same version?
So you're saying the one provided by Lenovo and Windows Update are both the same 9688 driver?IMAKYA wrote:Additional info:

It isn't good to use drivers from Lenovo's site when others are available. For the graphics card, you should go to nvidia's website directly and download the relevant driver there.

Surreal: Of course I didn't say that. I am pointing out the difference and wondering if anyone has tried the latest one on Windows Update.
Other person: Actually, that's not the recommended decision. Most parties recommend the PC manufacturer's version as it may be customized for the notebook. I'm just wondering if the Windows Update one will install without side effects and offer a performance improvement.

For nVidia-based *61 systems I always use the drivers directly from nVidia, not Lenovo or Windows Update. Haven't had a problem yet.
Obviously, YMMV.
