T22 top cover

#1 Post by Rex » Mon Dec 07, 2015 5:50 am

What ho one and all,

What ho one and all!

Been some time since I even looked at this forum since I have moved to a desktop! Somehow, I have managed to post this question to the Forums Q&A section, so can the mod please remove it. T22 is where it should be!

I was having a look at my collection of T21 and 22, only one of which still actually works, the others have some kind of BSOD issue. The mb's are all fine but dead screens, although the displays all work when installed into the working model.

However, the rubberised black covering to the top of two of the laptops has become soft and gunky. In fact, just opening the top leaves black gunk on the fingers.

Is there anything I can do about this? How can I remove it? Lighter fuel or something else?

Thanks

Toodle pip

I've seen people mention using talcum powder on the lid to at least cover up the stickiness, although yours might be too far gone for this to work. I'm not sure what it is about the T2x series machines, the rubber coating just doesn't hold up like newer or older machines.

Thanks for your reply. Don't think talc will do anything; it would reduce the stickiness but the rubber, although very thin is so soft that a finger nail mark remains.

What is strange is that it is atmospheric rather than sunlight. The computer has been in a cupboard for the last X years so certainly not a UV issue. May be try with some lighter fuel to remove the rubber. Don't even know if it is working; 100% flat / dead battery so will have to power it from the mains.

I'll figure something out. As for newer ones being better, only time will tell. After all, IBM / Lenovo don't want us to hang onto them forever. That way, the global economy stagnates!

I would either blame your damp climate for that, or you also stored something destructive in that same cupboard, like a dead body? .
I have about 10 of those machines (all T23) and all are perfectly "dry" and stable.

Is it particularly warm year round in this cupboard by chance?

Count yourself lucky, quite a few T2x machines I've come across have had the rubber break down like this. Oddly, it's the only series I've ever seen it on, the 600 series and the T30 series don't have the issue.

Ahhh! The dead body in the loft; that explains it.

Thanks, I'll give Pledge a try. Although it is probably too late in the day!

Maybe if the coating is completely unsalvageable, you could remove it. Then depending what's underneath, you might end up with a similar finish to the R series.
