Found some info on my X21

#1 Post by bhtooefr » Mon Jun 06, 2005 10:39 pm

I grabbed the serial number off of the used laptop seller's site, and tried it with 2660 and 2662. Great news - IBM's site only took 2662!

It is a 2662-66U. (Original OS is Win98. That does me no good.)

Here are specs according to IBM's site:

PIII 700MHz (256KB) 128MB RAM 20.0 GB 12.1 XGA TFT 1024x768, 3Com Combo LAN Modem, Win98

FWIW, estimated ship date is 2005-06-16...

Warranty expired 2004-06-27, but it doesn't really matter much, does it? After all, it's got a 30-day warranty from the seller...

Price was $332.50 (after shipping), and the 256MB RAM was $67 through Kahlon.com.

How badly did I do (it came with an UltraBase X2 with DVD-ROM)?

/Sorry editing my entire post.

an X21 with ultrabase X2 w/ DVD fo $350 shipped isn't too bad. For $400, you could have gotten an X22. THe ram was kind of a rip-off. They go for about half of that on ebay.

I figured I got ripped on the RAM.

I could have gotten a stick of A-Data PC133 from Newegg for about $40 after shipping, but I heard lots of reports that it wouldn't work with older IBM laptops, so I played it safe, and looked for the cheapest new RAM that said it would work with a ThinkPad X21...

I figured I was better off buying a pricey stick that WOULD work, than buy a cheap stick, then have to return it, and get another stick (and possibly a third stick), especially considering Newegg has a 15% restocking fee, and doesn't refund shipping...

Also, looking at what you said for an X22...

*looks at what the X21 can do (no wireless), looks at what the X22 can do, looks at Model M, grabs it, and smashes head in - the second time today ;-) *

You may not like the HD on the X21. Mine was a bit of a screamer. It was a perfect opportunity to upgrade to a 7200 rpm 7K60 which is much quieter.

Good idea to pick up the 256 meg of memory. I only added 128 meg to mine and wish I had gone with 256 meg.

Well, if I REALLY hate the HDD, this Dell has a DK23EA-30 (IIRC, that's the model number). With some partition resizing trickery, I could swap partitions (or, just reload the Dell onto that HDD)...

I don't really mind HDD noise (except for some older Seagate drives) that much, though. It's not NOISE that was the reason for getting this thing (well, fan noise was a little of it) - it was size and weight. This thing weighs EIGHT POUNDS... without the power adaptor. The X21? 5.8 at most, WITH the UltraBase (which I won't take EVERYWHERE), but not counting the power adaptor. The power adaptor is 0.74 lbs for the X21, 0.66lbs for the Dell, for a total of 6.54 for the IBM, 8.66 for the Dell...

Also, I chose to go with the 256MB upgrade because I had JUST upgraded this Dell to 384 (from 256), and liked it a LOT better. I tend to use a LOT of RAM, but not much CPU.

Dell actually sells regular IDE pin'd hard drives? This year at college, all the Dell laptops I saw used a slot instead of a pin interface. There's the same number of pins, so I'm assuming that they're doing this so people can't swap hard drives an makes Dell customers only able to buy hard drives from Dell. I would assume that if you bought a hard drive from Dell that the interface would be this proprietary slot.

Well, I've taken out the HDD in this laptop twice (the first time to reseat it, the second to get some data off of an identical laptop's HDD (the other laptop's mobo had fried)).

It most definitely had pins.

Well, bad news...

The site that I ordered it from showed the status as changing from "Picked" (I think that basically means that I selected what I wanted) to "Troubled"... Whatever that means, it can't be good.

The estimated ship date hasn't changed, though...

Dell is pretty sneaky. Most of their laptops now use the slots. The slots are really just an adapter on the HD itself; it slides right off (well, sometimes with a little help from a jewlers screwdriver or other flat instrument).....

It slides off?...

Boy I feel stupid. I thought they had changed the whole circuit board to make it a slot (which wouldn't be too expensive anyway). Oops...

I had a friend who wondered if I could help her recover the data on the computer for her twice, and I wasn't able to do it because the equipment Ihad was a PCMCIA <-> 2.5" IDE *PIN* connector. I told her I couldn't do it unless I made my own slot <-> pin convert, for which I had no equipment. Had I known that it slides off...

I guess this also means that even if you have a Dell computer, you'd be able to move the converter from your old hard drive to your new pinned hard drive.

Estimated ship date is still 2005-06-16, but here's the current info:

Order: ORDER-44716
Created: 6/2/2005
Estimated Ship Date: 6/16/2005
Status: Shipping
Ship Date: None

No ship date, but it's getting close...

As for the RAM, the USPS has recieved notification that they're supposed to pick it up (the tracking number is already in their system), but they haven't actually picked it up yet. The site said that they sent notification on the 2nd at 11:30 AM, the USPS says that they recieved it at 2:40 PM. This is obviously a USPS snafu ;-)

Well, the RAM has made it to my school, according to the USPS (8:06 AM, according to them)...

Now, we're just waiting on the actual COMPUTER ;-)

YES!

No tracking code to work with, but it can't take long - it's got under 50 miles to go from warehouse to destination.
