VMware - guest install hitch

#1 Post by jwhpa » Mon Jun 06, 2005 10:54 pm

This is so elementally stupid, but I have VMware 5.0 up and have created a virtual machine upon which I'm trying to install 98se. Following the installation instructions, I open the Workstation, insert the 98se disk in the drive, and power on the virtual machine. The VM boots, the drive winds, and the 98se opening screen prompts appear requesting I select 1. Boot fm the HD or 2. Boot fm the CD. I'm unable to enter anything at this point at the prompt, so the timer elapses leaving a black screen with a non-blinking DOS cursor. I don't seem to have any interaction fm the keyboard with the 98se prompt screen. What am I doing (or what have I done) wrong.
Thanks,
JH

You need to click on the text with the mouse to make the Virtual Machine the active machine. Then you should be able to answer the prompt. Until the VMware Tools are installed, the focus of the keyboard and mouse between the host machine and the virtual machine are not automatic. You also need to check the documentation - once you are operating in the virtual machine, you need a key sequence to get back to the host until the Tools are installed (Ctrl-Alt). ... JD Hurst

VMware installation sequence

Should the VMware Tools be installed before the guest operating system? The instructions seemed to imply the opposite.

Correct - the vmware tools are drivers and utilities that get installed to the guest operating system AFTER it is installed.

I've used vmware quite a bit and haven't seen your issue - but I've never tried to go re-live the *&%$%# issues that come with Win9x either. :-)
