where is the cmos battery?

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

where is the cmos battery?

#1 Post by TheGreenOne3589 » Tue Jun 07, 2005 7:27 am

hey, i know it may be a noob question but i cant seem to find the cmos battery. I recently aquired a 600e and it has the problem where when you plug it in the charging battery light does not turn on and when you hit the power button the lights light up for a second then turn off. i read a thread where someone had this problem and they said replacing the cmos battery fixed it. so if anyone could tell me where the cmos battery is or any other suggestions for fixing it, that would be great

Open the SO-DIMM cover on the bottom of the machine and you'll see the battery encased in yellow shrinkwrap.

The only thing that happens when that cmos battery goes dead, is you get error's 161 163 and 172. Sounds like you kneed a new motherboard,
If you don't get those error's then It's not your cmos.

Sometimes a depleted CMOS battery can cause the symptoms listed, a completely dead 600.

It's where I'd start in attempting a resurrection.

Have you tested the AC adapter? It sounds like it is not getting power and you're attempting to boot from a dead battery. Of course it could be a bad board but I would test the AC adapter asap- it sounds like it is dead. Also since you acquired it, I am wondering if you have a real IBM AC adapter or if you are using something else (incompatible.)
